Řekla veliteli SS, že je mistryně v krasobruslení. Lhala. Ten šampionát totiž ještě ani neexistoval. Neuvěříte, co bylo dál. V červnu 1943 dorazila jednadvacetiletá Židovka Ellen Danby do nacistického tranzitního tábora Westerbork. Byla to přestupní stanice na cestě do vyhlazovacích táborů. Když se jí důstojníci při registraci ptali na profesi, Ellen udělala něco neuvěřitelně riskantního: tvrdila, že je úřadující mistryní Nizozemska v krasobruslení. Mělo to jediný háček. Oficiální nizozemský krasobruslařský šampionát v té době ještě vůbec neexistoval. Ellen sice skvěle bruslila, ale titul si vymyslela v čisté záchraně holého života. A pak přišel hned dvojitý zásah osudu. Velitel tábora Albert Gemmeker byl vášnivým fanouškem krasobruslení. Místo toho, aby Ellen poslal prvním vlakem na východ, nechal jí z okupovaného Amsterdamu přivézt její vlastní brusle a šaty. Vznikla tak mrazivá, téměř surrealistická scéna: zatímco z tábora odjížděly dobytčkáky plné lidí do plynových komor, mladá židovská dívka kroužila na zamrzlém táborovém rybníku. Tato drzá lež jí zachránila život, její rodině ale ne. Matka, otec i babička byli deportováni do Sobiboru a zavražděni. Ellen byla později převezena do Terezína, kde se jí podařilo dočkat konce války a kde potkala svou životní lásku — českého umělce Jana Burku. I to co se stalo po válce, zní jako hollywoodský film. Lží zrozený titul se stal proroctvím. Ellen se po osvobození vrátila na led a v letech 1946 a 1947 ten samý šampionát, který si v táboře vymyslela, doopravdy VYHRÁLA. V roce 1950 s Janem emigrovala do Kanady. Z dívky, která krasobruslením utekla smrti, se stala legendární trenérka, jež navždy změnila tvář světového krasobruslení: Historický rekord: Vychovala vlastní dceru Petru Burku, která v roce 1962 jako první žena v historii skočila v soutěži trojitý Salchow a získala olympijský bronz i titul mistryně světa. Revoluce na ledě: Trénovala ikony jako Tollera Cranstona nebo Elvise Stojka. Do do té doby svázaného sportu vnesla dramatické umění, emoce a styl zvaný „Theatre on Ice“. Mlčení pro ochranu dětí: Před svými dcerami prožité hrůzy i židovský původ desítky let tajila. Tvrdila jim, že prarodiče zemřeli při autonehodě — chtěla je ušetřit traumatu i tehdejšímu antisemitismu v kanadských klubech. Pravdu se dozvěděly až v dospělosti. Ellen Burka trénovala aktivně ještě ve svých 90 letech. Zemřela v roce 2016 ve věku 95 let jako členka několika Síní slávy a držitelka nejvyššího státního vyznamenání Order of Canada.
