When Pathology Takes Power If the last decade in the West felt unstable, you’re not imagining it. Andrew Lobaczewski studied how psychological pathology can spread into politics and produce “pathocracy”: societies where disordered personalities gain disproportionate power. He argued that revolutionary upheaval drives “negative selection.” Healthy people are pushed out or leave; manipulative, lying, and ruthless personalities rise through institutions. The system keeps its name and funding, but its character changes. At the top are essential psychopaths—empathy- and guilt-free exploiters. Beside them are schizoids who treat people as data and design control systems from abstract theories. Next come spellbinders: charismatic figures who package authoritarian ideas in the language of compassion, using invented moral standards for convenience. Then the spellbound: true believers. Around them gather conformists who comply to protect careers, while resisters are targeted and bystanders adapt to avoid trouble. Lobaczewski estimated a small minority builds the system, a larger group serves it, and most merely adjusts. Over time, society becomes the censor: truth turns dangerous, sanity is labeled extremism, and resistance is punished. The point isn’t only that bad ideas harm. It’s that pathological personalities can exploit good intentions, ideology, and institutional power—so the real conflict is psychological health versus pathology, and healthy institutions must be able to recognize the difference.

Why Psychopaths Rise to Power: What Hitler, Stalin & Mao Had in Common Polish psychiatrist Andrew Lobaczewski argued that in certain conditions, psychologically disordered people can rise through institutions and create “pathocracy,” where pathological personalities gain disproportionate power. He described “negative selection”: upheaval pushes aside those with conscience and competence while manipulative, ruthless figures thrive. At the core are psychopaths, who feel little guilt or empathy and use normal human weaknesses as tools. Around them are schizoids, ideological architects who turn abstractions into systems for managing people. Next are spellbinders, charismatic leaders who frame authoritarian ideas as moral duty. Together they produce “paramoralisms”—moral standards that invert reality: dissent becomes extremism, censorship becomes protection, coercion becomes compassion. Beneath them are true believers and conformists who follow out of conviction or career safety, echoing Milgram’s insight that the key question is who gives the orders. Finally come bystanders, a frightened majority that adapts to avoid trouble until self-policing replaces external coercion. Lobaczewski’s warning: pathological behavior becomes far more dangerous when society mistakes it for morality. The real struggle isn’t left vs. right—it’s whether institutions can preserve truth and resist normalization of destructive behavior.

Contraception and Western Culture In the 1960s, the birth-control pill became widely available. Sexual liberation is usually presented as a story of freedom and progress, but its biological consequence is rarely discussed: sex could now be separated from reproduction. Every Western nation has experienced below-replacement fertility for decades. Oxford anthropologist J. D. Unwin anticipated this pattern in *Sex and Culture*, a study of 86 societies. He expected to disprove any link between sexual restraint and civilizational achievement. Instead, he concluded that cultures practicing strict monogamy generated energy expressed through art, science, conquest, and commerce. Relaxing sexual restraint, he argued, consistently weakened that energy within three generations. Unwin also predicted that such societies would abandon rationalism, deism, and monogamy. Three generations after 1960 brings us near the present, and some of his predictions appear increasingly visible. Religious affiliation has collapsed, marriage is declining, the median age at first marriage is at a record high, and a record share of people will never marry. Rationalism also appears to be giving way to egoism, identity, and emotion. Contraception helps explain this transformation. Evolutionary theory distinguishes between a behavior’s immediate purpose—such as pleasure—and its ultimate function, such as reproduction. Sex traditionally served both purposes. Contraception severed that connection, preserving the behavior while disconnecting it from reproduction. Female education, urbanization, workforce participation, economic growth, and the rising cost of living also correlate with declining fertility. Yet many of these changes depend on technological control over reproduction. Career-first lifestyles, extended education, and mass female workforce participation would be far more difficult without it. Women may have gained freedom from child-rearing, but they may have fewer daughters to inherit that freedom. Institutions that promoted this transformation now import replacement populations that may not share its values and could eventually reverse them.

AfD-Gutachten: Wer prüft eigentlich die Prüfer? Das neue, rund 1.500 Seiten starke AfD-Gutachten stammt nicht von einem Gericht, einer Behörde oder einem parlamentarischen Wissenschaftlichen Dienst. Erstellt wurde es von einem achtköpfigen Team der Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte e. V. (GFF) – einer politisch operierenden NGO, die das Ergebnis nun ausdrücklich als Grundlage für ein AfD-Verbotsverfahren vermarktet. Zur Finanzierung erklärt die GFF: ermöglicht durch rund 20.000 Einzelspender. Campact bestätigt zugleich, dass auch die Demokratie-Stiftung Campact „bei der Finanzierung geholfen“ habe. Eine projektgenaue Aufschlüsselung – welcher institutionelle Akteur wie viel zahlte – ist bislang nicht veröffentlicht. Und dann wird es interessant: Die GFF führt die Open Society Foundations ausdrücklich als institutionelle Geldgeberin auf – für eine Verfassungsbeschwerde und „allgemeine Förderung“. Zusätzlich nennt sie das Foundation Open Society Institute, die Open Society Initiative for Europe und die Open Society Foundations für Arbeiten zu zivilgesellschaftlichen Handlungsspielräumen und Whistleblowing. Open Society ist keine nebulöse Verschwörungsformel, sondern das von George Soros aufgebaute internationale Stiftungsnetzwerk. Soros hat nach eigenen Angaben der Organisation mehr als 32 Milliarden Dollar dafür bereitgestellt; Vorsitzender ist heute sein Sohn Alex Soros. Journalistisch sauber muss man unterscheiden: Bislang ist nicht belegt, dass Open Society unmittelbar das konkrete AfD-Gutachten bezahlt hat. Belegt ist aber, dass die herausgebende Organisation institutionell und allgemein aus dem Soros-Stiftungsnetzwerk gefördert wurde. Gerade deshalb wäre eine vollständige, projektbezogene Finanzierungsaufstellung zwingend. Denn hier arbeitet ein geschlossenes Advocacy-Ökosystem: GFF erstellt das Gutachten. Campact hilft bei der Finanzierung und fordert anschließend den „Startschuss“ für das Verbotsverfahren. Der RAV, bereits Unterstützer der Gutachtenkampagne, organisiert danach den offenen Brief von inzwischen mehr als 1.000 Juristen und beruft sich auf das GFF-Gutachten. Das beweist nicht, dass das Gutachten juristisch falsch ist. Es widerlegt aber die Inszenierung einer politisch und institutionell voraussetzungslosen Expertise. Wer mit einem privat finanzierten NGO-Gutachten das schärfste Instrument des Parteienrechts legitimieren will, muss Autoren, Geldflüsse, Unterstützer und personelle Netzwerke maximal transparent machen. Ich prüfe deshalb jetzt sämtliche Unterzeichner: RAV, GFF, VDJ, ECCHR, Amnesty, Refugee Law Clinics, „Kritische Jurist*innen“, Parteien, Ministerien, Hochschulen, staatliche Prüfungsausschüsse, Stiftungsförderungen sowie Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes und DAAD. Nicht, um anwaltliches Engagement zu skandalisieren – sondern um sichtbar zu machen, ob hier tatsächlich mehr als 1.000 unabhängige Einzelstimmen sprechen oder ein seit Jahren personell und finanziell verflochtenes juristisch-politisches Milieu mobilisiert wurde.
