A nation is more than a territory, a government or a passport. It is a shared story, and culture is the language in which that story is told. So how should a country tax the very culture that defines it? What makes Estonia; Estonia? It is not simply the borders on a map or the institutions of the Republic. It is the Estonian language, the songs people know, the literature they read, the traditions they preserve, the architecture they recognise, the stories they tell their children and the artists who continue to reinterpret all of it for a new generation. Estonia is not the only country with high VAT There is an important misconception in the current debate. Estonia’s 24% VAT is high, but having a high standard VAT rate does not mean that a country has to apply that same rate to culture. The European Union leaves member states considerable freedom to establish reduced VAT rates. Under the current framework, countries can apply reduced rates as low as 5% to eligible categories. #culture #Estonia #Tax #CulturalTax https://tunitemusic.com/post/24-vat-on-culture-how-estonia-compares-with-europe/

24% VAT on Culture: How Estonia Compares With Europe - Tunitemusic

What does it actually mean to live from music in Estonia? For an independent musician, the answer is more complicated than it sounds. I have recently been fortunate enough to experience something that many musicians dream of: I can live from my music. I compose, produce, perform, write, run a music label and organise concerts. After years of combining music with other jobs, I finally have the freedom to make my living from the thing I have always wanted to do. It sounds wonderful. Well, it is wonderful. But it is also a struggle that is rarely visible from the outside. As an independent artist and entrepreneur, I do not simply receive money for making music. I have to create that income through my company, pay the costs of running the business, pay taxes, and then pay myself a salary. There is no employer absorbing the administrative and financial burden behind my work. I am simultaneously the artist, producer, promoter, employer and employee. At the moment, my income is modest. I pay myself roughly €900 because that is what my business can realistically sustain. Yet for my company to pay me that amount, the actual cost is around €1,370. Approximately €470 goes towards social tax and other mandatory employment related payments. And this comes after VAT has already taken its share of my business activity. That is the part of the discussion that is often missing when we talk about taxation. #estonia #estonianculture #music #tax #eutax #musictax #concert https://tunitemusic.com/post/an-independent-artists-view-of-estonias-24-vat/

In a career spanning more than five decades, few musicians have achieved the same level of reverence for Ludwig van Beethoven’s late piano sonatas as Mitsuko Uchida. Her new release; Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Opp. 109‑110‑111, captures a live performance at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall in October 2025, marking her second and final recording of these monumental works. The album follows her acclaimed 2006 studio version and the Gramophone Award‑winning Diabelli Variations, which earned her a Grammy nomination in 2023. #MitsukoUchida #Beethoven #PianoSonatas #Opp109 #Opp110 #Opp111 #SuntoryHall #LiveRecording #ClassicalMusic #BeethovenLateWorks #MusicCritique #GramophoneAward #GrammyNominee #ClevelandOrchestra #JapaneseConcert #ClassicalNewReleases https://tunitemusic.com/post/mitsuko-uchida-beethoven-piano-sonatas-opp-109-110-111-new-release/

Often hailed as the “King of Instruments” (Sultan al-Awtar) across the Middle East and North Africa, the oud (Arabic: العود) occupies a unique apex in global history of music. With its pear-shaped wooden body, fretless neck, deeply vaulted bowl, and resonant warmth, this ancient chordophone has served as the foundational pillar of Eastern classical music systems for over two millennia. More than merely a musical tool, the oud has functioned as a philosophical laboratory, a vehicle for theoretical innovation, and the direct ancestor of European string traditions that shaped Western art music. #Oud #MusicalInstruments #MiddleEasternMusic #WorldMusic #Lute #MusicHistory #Ethnomusicology #ArabicMusic #TurkishMusic #Maqam #AcousticMusic #NaseerShamma #AnouarBrahem #Ziryab #BaitAlOud https://tunitemusic.com/post/the-oud-history-masters-and-global-legacy/

From 2 to 11 of September, Estonia will host a week‑long series of concerts under the banner of Pärt Days 2026. The program, carefully curated to illuminate different facets of Arvo Pärt’s oeuvre, will juxtapose his minimalist signatures with works from earlier musical epochs, fostering musical dialogues that span centuries. The Pärt Days tradition began in 2010 as part of the larger Pärt celebration weeks and has since become the dignified conclusion to the Nargen Festival season. This year’s editions will unfold in venues across the country, offering audiences an immersive experience of Pärt’s music from a spectrum of interpretative angles. #ArvoPärt #PärtDays2026 #EstoniaMusic #ConcertSeries #ClassicalMusic #MusicFestival #NargenFestival #ComposerDialogue #MusicHistory #Interpretation #ContemporaryMusic #WorldMusic #MusicReview #MusicMagazine #CulturalHeritage https://tunitemusic.com/post/part-days-2026-estonia-celebrates-arvo-parts-legacy/

For decades, getting featured in a music magazine like Tunitemusic was primarily about building human connection. A well-written, deeply descriptive album review or an insightful artist feature allowed independent musicians, contemporary composers, and instrumental artists to share their narrative, establish cultural credibility, and reach a dedicated audience of music lovers. While the human element of music journalism remains entirely irreplaceable, a quiet revolution has taken place behind the digital curtain. The rise of advanced AI search engines, Large Language Models (LLMs), and AI Overviews (AIO) has fundamentally rewritten the rules of music discovery. Today, press presence is no longer just a tool for public relations; it is the single most important lever for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). If you want artificial intelligence to recognize you, recommend your compositions, and talk about your music, you need professional reviews written about your work. #MusicPromotion #MusicJournalism #IndependentMusician #MusicReviews #ComposerLife #MusicPR #Neoclassical #AmbientPiano #MusicDiscovery #IndependentArtist #GenerativeAI #MusicMarketing #ContemporaryClassical #Tunitemusic #ArtistsOfTomorrow https://tunitemusic.com/post/ai-search-is-changing-how-music-fans-discover-you/

Among many great concertos by legendary composers, Sergei Rachmaninoff‘s contributions, specifically his second concerto, remains one of all-time favorites of mine. The sweeping melody played by the cellos in the first movement is easily one of the most emotionally devastating moments in all of classical music. Then comes the second movement, suspended in a sentimental, dreamlike state, followed by the stunning third movement, driven by those thrilling, jumping staccatos. Throughout it all, the piano is doing wonders, absolutely stunning, virtuosic writing that never feels empty, but always deeply purposeful. #Rachmaninoff #PianoConcerto #ClassicalMusic #ComposerLife #Pianist #InTheEternalDay #VinylCommunity #TehranSymphonyOrchestra #VahdatHall #MusicReview #OrchestralMusic #ClassicalVinyl #Rach2 #MusicNarrative #SymphonicWorks https://tunitemusic.com/post/rachmaninoff-piano-concerto-no-2-a-review/

Few musical forms capture the sheer scale of human drama quite like the piano concerto. It is the ultimate dialogue: a single, vulnerable instrument standing up to, conversing with, and sometimes battling an entire hundred-piece orchestra. But let’s get one thing straight before we dive in. I generally don’t like the idea of designating the “best” or top music pieces or composers. Art, in general, is very subjective. Yes, there are criteria that make a musical piece technically “better” than another, but after a point, when those criteria are over the standard, it is not possible to choose objectively what is better. As the great Béla Bartók once dryly put it: “Competition is for horses, not composers.” Even so, it is undeniably fun to introduce my personal favorite pieces and composers. So while we may casually throw around phrases like the “best piano concertos of all time,” keep in mind there is no specific order here. These are simply ten awesome works that offer a transcendent listening experience. I highly suggest you sit and just listen to them from beginning to end; or, even better, find them in a concert happening near you and attend it live. #ClassicalMusic #PianoConcerto #PianistLife #MusicMagazine #Rachmaninoff #Beethoven #Mozart #Tchaikovsky #ClassicalPiano #LiveMusic #MusicHistory #Chopin #Schumann #ConcertGoer #ClassicFM https://tunitemusic.com/post/top-10-piano-concertos-of-all-time/

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) premiered Philip Glass’s latest masterpiece, Symphony No. 15 “Lincoln,” at its summer home in Lenox, Massachusetts. The eight‑movement work, composed between 2021 and 2023, couples a solo baritone with a full orchestra to present a sonic portrait of the 16th President, drawing directly from Lincoln’s own speeches and writings. #PhilipGlass #SymphonyNo15 #Lincoln #BostonSymphony #Tanglewood #Baritone #KarenKamensek #ZacharyJames #AmericanMusic #JohnWilliams #Copland #KennedyCenter #ClassicalMusic #PoliticalProtest #Orchestra https://tunitemusic.com/post/the-boston-symphony-orchestra-pemieres-philip-glasss-symphony-no-15lincoln/

The Devil’s Music: From Paganini to Inferno, a unique piano concert by composer and pianist Arash Azizi taking place on 31 July in Tallinn at the intimate Heldeke venue. Unlike a traditional recital, the concert will be built around live improvisation on legendary themes associated with darkness, temptation, death, and the supernatural. The journey begins with the famous myths surrounding Giuseppe Tartini and Niccolò Paganini, two figures whose extraordinary musical abilities inspired stories of demonic influence and supernatural inspiration. #Tallinn #TallinnConcert #EstonianMusic #ClassicalMusic #PianoConcert #LiveImprovisation #Paganini #Liszt #SaintSaens #Stravinsky #DiesIrae #Inferno #DivineSonata #Tunitemusic #TallinnFringeFestival https://tunitemusic.com/post/the-devils-music-in-tallinn/

Joseph Haydn is rightfully remembered as a titan of Western classical music. The “Father of the Symphony” and the “Father of the String Quartet” spent his long life building the structural foundations of the Classical era, mentoring a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and teaching a tempestuous Ludwig van Beethoven. When he passed away in Vienna in 1809 at the age of 77, the musical world wept. Yet, while his musical legacy remained perfectly intact, his physical body was about to endure one of the most grotesque and surreal misadventures in music history. Haydn’s death coincided with the Napoleonic occupation of Vienna. Because of the wartime chaos, the celebrated composer was hastily buried in a simple, unglamorous grave at the Hundsturm cemetery. A proper, grand burial would have to wait. But just days after his funeral, under the cover of darkness, two men bribed the local gravedigger, exhumed the composer’s fresh corpse, and cleanly severed his head. They stuffed the skull into a sack and vanished into the night, leaving a headless icon behind. https://tunitemusic.com/post/the-composer-with-two-heads-the-bizarre-macabre-afterlife-of-joseph-haydn/
