GFrei.News wrote that the German nurse Sonja Nientiet was kidnapped on May 3, 2018, in Mogadishu, where she had worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross. A guard helped the kidnappers; a Kenyan colleague who was also abducted was able to escape. Since then, Nientiet has been allegedly handed over to jihadists. Citing a report from Bild, GFrei.News wrote that the Federal Intelligence Service had determined Nientiet's whereabouts about two years after her kidnapping and a rescue operation was being prepared. The Special Forces command had trained for this, US services had provided reconnaissance information, and the USA had wanted to deploy Black Hawk helicopters. The then-current KSK commander traveled to Mogadishu for reconnaissance. According to the report, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stopped the operation because it could end in a bloodbath and cost Nientiet or involved soldiers their lives. GFrei.News criticized that Nientiet had not returned to Germany during the terms of Annalena Baerbock and Johann Wadephul. Nientiet's mother Christel passed away in 2024 at the age of 84, without knowing whether her daughter was still alive. In spring 2025, Nientiet asked for help in a video and reported a deterioration in her health. In June 2026, the federal government refused to provide specific information in the Bundestag regarding her health status, whereabouts, or possible initiatives for her release, GFrei.News wrote. The author called on Wadephul to explain what he was specifically doing for Nientiet's return. #SonjaNientiet #Geiselnahme #Bundesregierung (translated)
