Hoy en @ColeccionesRSP quiero platicarles como uno de los viajes más importantes para mapear la costa del Pacífico no buscaba conquistar nuevos territorios, sino encontrar un paso de agua que conectara los océanos. Hoy revisamos la primera edición (1802) de la Relación del viage hecho por las goletas Sutil y Mexicana. En 1792, los comandantes Dionisio Alcalá Galiano y Cayetano Valdés exploraron el Pacífico Norte y rodearon la Isla de Vancouver. Su misión era buscar el Paso del Noroeste, en medio de la fuerte competencia territorial que España tenía con Rusia y Gran Bretaña. Aunque confirmaron que el paso no existía, el registro del viaje es fundamental. El volumen incluye un vocabulario indígena de la región de Nootka, datos de las misiones de Alta California y un atlas con mapas y grabados que integraron información de otras misiones, como la de Alessandro Malaspina. Sin embargo, el libro tuvo muy poca distribución en su momento. Esto provocó que, con el tiempo, la cartografía británica se impusiera y los nombres ingleses dominaran los mapas modernos de esa región, desplazando el trabajo de esta expedición. Porque resguardar el patrimonio documental no es solo conservar libros antiguos, sino rescatar los esfuerzos, los nombres y la historia que quedaron fuera del mapa.
