Over the last 365 days, more than 40,000 record-high temperatures were set in the U. S. , compared to just over 12,000 record-low temperatures, indicating that record warmth is outpacing record cold.

While extreme cold has settled into the eastern half of the U. S. , including many across the South shivering without power after Winter Storm Fern, another shot of even colder air will spill south and east late this week and weekend.
