Italy has quietly become one of Europe’s biggest environmental success stories. More than one-third of the country’s land is now covered by forests, the highest level since the Middle Ages. Much of this growth happened naturally as abandoned farmland regenerated over the past century, alongside conservation efforts and sustainable forest management. The expanding forests are helping absorb carbon, restore wildlife habitats, reduce erosion, and improve biodiversity, making Italy an unexpected leader in large-scale reforestation.
