V létě 1968 odjel osmnáctiletý Ondřej Křivánek z Prahy na několik týdnů do Anglie, aby si procvičil angličtinu. Měl se vrátit na matematicko-fyzikální fakultu (@matfyz). Pak přišla noc z 20. na 21. srpna. Tanky Varšavské smlouvy obsadily Československo. Otec mu před odjezdem řekl jedinou větu: „Jestli přijdou Rusové, nevracej se.“ Zůstal. O téměř šedesát let později, v březnu 2026, stál tentýž muž v Brně při slavnostním otevření nové laboratoře UltraSTEM v Ústavu přístrojové techniky Akademie věd ČR (@Akademie_ved_CR). Přivezl technologii, kterou spoluvytvořil a která teď poprvé stojí v Česku. Křivánek se narodil 1. srpna 1950 v Praze-Bubenči. V osmnácti reprezentoval Československo na Mezinárodní fyzikální olympiádě. Po invazi a nucené emigraci získal stipendium na University of Leeds, vystudoval fyziku s vyznamenáním a pokračoval na Cambridge u Archieho Howieho. Doktorát obhájil v roce 1976. Pak následovala klasická vědecká pouť špičkového vědce: postdoky v Kjótu, Bellových laboratořích a Berkeley. V Berkeley postavil svůj první spektrometr pro elektronovou energetickou ztrátovou spektroskopii. Později v Gatanu vyvinul systémy, které se staly standardem. Klíčový problém elektronové mikroskopie byl starý přes padesát let: sférická aberace. Elektronové čočky nedokázaly zaostřit paprsek dost ostře, aby bylo možné spolehlivě vidět jednotlivé atomy. Mnozí experti tvrdili, že to nejde. Křivánek s Niklasem Dellbym to v Cambridge v roce 1997 dokázali. Vznikl první funkční korektor aberací pro skenovací transmisní elektronový mikroskop. V roce 2000 dodali první komerční verzi do IBM. Rozlišení překročilo hranici jednoho ångströmu. V roce 1997 založili firmu Nion a postupně z ní udělali výrobce celých mikroskopů UltraSTEM. Ty dnes umožňují i vibrační spektroskopii a zobrazování lehkých prvků včetně vodíku bez poškození vzorku. V roce 2020 Křivánek získal Kavliho cenu za nanovědy. Nion později koupil Bruker (@bruker). Křivánek dnes působí jako jeho vědecký poradce a afilovaný profesor na Arizona State University (@ASU). Do Brna přijel v březnu 2026 jako host. Nová laboratoř UltraSTEM je vybavena špičkovým elektronovým mikroskopem Nion, který je prvním přístrojem svého druhu v Česku. Pracuje s nízkými energiemi elektronů a pokročilými metodami, jako je 4D-STEM a ptychografie. Umožňuje zkoumat citlivé materiály i biologické struktury atom po atomu, aniž by je zničil. Mikroskop stál přes 50 milionů korun a laboratoř je otevřená vědcům z celé Evropy. Pro české a evropské výzkumníky to znamená konkrétní posun. Brno už dlouho patří mezi silná centra elektronové mikroskopie. S tímto přístrojem získává nástroj, který dovoluje studovat materiály a biologické vzorky na úrovni, kde dříve hrozilo jejich zničení. To otevírá cestu k přesnějšímu výzkumu nových materiálů, polovodičů, katalyzátorů i biomolekul a posiluje mezinárodní spolupráci. Křivánek na otevření osobně představil historii firmy a technologií, které se staly standardem. Vedle něj seděl nositel Nobelovy ceny Richard Henderson. Příběh se tím uzavřel: chlapec, kterého invaze „uvěznila“ venku, se po téměř šedesáti letech vrátil s know-how, které změnilo obor. Sám zůstal v Americe, ale jeho technologie teď stojí v Brně a slouží dalším generacím. Elektronová mikroskopie není jen o ostrých fotkách. Umožňuje pochopit, proč materiály fungují, jak se chovají defekty v polovodičích, nebo jak vypadají biologické struktury na úrovni, kde rozhoduje jeden atom. Díky korektorům aberací se z „Hubbleova dalekohledu před opravou“ staly nástroje, které vidí ostře – a teď i u nás. P.S.: Každý den sem dávám alespoň jeden zajímavý pozitivní příběh.
