La première fois que j’ai vu apparaître les fact-checkers, c’était après le 11 Septembre. Leur rôle semblait alors simple et plutôt sain : démonter les photomontages grossiers, les fausses citations, les histoires de missile sur le Pentagone et les théories les plus extravagantes. Sur le principe, rien de choquant. Je m’étais pourtant immédiatement interrogé sur le caractère contre-productif de la méthode. C’est précisément par les articles et les émissions censés réfuter ces récits que j’ai découvert l’existence de la plupart des « versions alternatives » des attentats. Internet était alors beaucoup moins développé qu’aujourd’hui : sans cette publicité offerte par les grands médias, nombre de ces théories seraient probablement restées confinées à quelques forums obscurs. Le fact-checking prétendait éteindre une rumeur, mais commençait souvent par lui donner un nom, une audience et une importance qu’elle n’avait pas. Le rôle des médias était d’autant plus paradoxal qu’ils avaient eux-mêmes entretenu pendant des années tout un imaginaire du secret et du soupçon. Sur RMC et ailleurs, les pyramides, les Templiers, les civilisations disparues, les sociétés secrètes, les prophéties et les mystères de l’Histoire fournissaient des heures de programmes. Tant que le complotisme faisait de l’audience et restait cantonné aux tombeaux égyptiens, il était un divertissement. Il ne devenait soudain dangereux que lorsqu’il quittait les Templiers pour s’intéresser au pouvoir contemporain. Les médias jouaient donc sur les deux tableaux : ils popularisaient le goût des vérités cachées, puis se présentaient comme les seuls arbitres légitimes du doute. Ils choisissaient généralement la théorie la plus grotesque, lui offraient une exposition nationale, la réfutaient sans difficulté, puis utilisaient cette victoire facile pour disqualifier en bloc des interrogations parfois beaucoup plus sérieuses. Mais le véritable changement d’échelle intervient après l’élection de Donald Trump en 2016. Sa victoire est vécue par une grande partie des médias comme un accident inexplicable. Plutôt que d’interroger leur perte d’influence, leur homogénéité idéologique ou leur incapacité à comprendre une partie de la population, ils trouvent une explication plus confortable : les électeurs auraient été trompés par Internet, Facebook, les Russes et les « fake news ». Le fact-checking cesse alors d’être un outil journalistique parmi d’autres. Il devient une réponse politique à un scrutin jugé incompréhensible. Il ne s’agit plus seulement de corriger une fausse citation, mais de comprendre comment les électeurs ont pu « mal voter », puis de construire les outils censés empêcher que cela se reproduise. Les cellules de vérification se multiplient. Les déclarations politiques sont découpées, notées et classées. Puis on ne juge plus seulement les informations, mais les médias eux-mêmes. Avec le Décodex, un grand journal ne se contente plus de vérifier un fait : il distribue des certificats de fiabilité à ses concurrents. Le fact-checker n’est plus seulement un journaliste corrigeant une erreur ; il devient une agence de notation idéologique. L’étape suivante consiste à travailler directement avec les plateformes. Les verdicts peuvent désormais entraîner avertissements, limitation du partage, réduction de visibilité ou suppression. Une erreur journalistique n’est plus seulement publiée dans un article : elle peut produire immédiatement une sanction technique. Or les erreurs et les emballements s’accumulent. Des hypothèses encore discutées sont présentées comme définitivement fausses avant de redevenir recevables. L’hypothèse d’une fuite de laboratoire pour le Covid est confondue avec les théories les plus extravagantes. L’affaire de l’ordinateur de Hunter Biden est traitée dans l’urgence comme une possible opération de désinformation, au moment même où sa diffusion est limitée. Les rectifications arrivent plus tard, discrètement, lorsque l’élection ou la polémique est terminée. À cela s’ajoute une sélection de plus en plus visible. Certaines approximations sont traquées pendant plusieurs jours ; d’autres deviennent une maladresse, du second degré ou une phrase sortie de son contexte. Le fact-checking prétend vérifier des faits objectifs, mais choisit lui-même les sujets, les formulations et le degré d’indulgence accordé à chacun. Surtout, il continue à servir de caisse de résonance à ceux qu’il veut marginaliser. Une publication confidentielle peut devenir un sujet national après sa reprise par Les Décodeurs, l’AFP ou CheckNews. Le « débunkage » reproduit le message, l’image, le raisonnement et le nom de son auteur. Même lorsqu’elle est juste, la correction fait connaître ce qu’elle prétend neutraliser. Restait alors le problème le plus embarrassant : que faire de ceux qui ne diffusent pas de fausses informations ? Les extraits de Samuel Laurent consacrés à Fdesouche sont à ce titre révélateurs. Il reconnaît que le site reprend principalement des informations publiées par des médias fiables. Le reproche ne porte donc plus sur la fausseté des faits, mais sur leur sélection, leur accumulation, leur « ratio » et l’intention politique supposée de celui qui les rassemble. Les informations sont vraies, mais leur répétition fabriquerait un récit jugé malhonnête. À partir de là, le fact-checking change totalement de nature. Puisqu’on ne peut plus réfuter les faits, on juge leur dosage. Puisqu’on ne peut plus dénoncer le mensonge, on examine le cadrage, l’intention et l’effet produit sur le lecteur. C’est ainsi que l’on passe de la « fake news » à la « malinformation », puis aux contenus « borderline », aux « zones grises de l’information » et enfin aux « ingérences intérieures ». Le vocabulaire s’élargit à mesure que le domaine du faux se révèle trop étroit. Une information peut désormais devenir suspecte sans être inexacte, simplement parce qu’elle alimente le mauvais récit, insiste sur les mauvais faits ou produit le mauvais effet politique. L’évolution est parfaitement cohérente. Le fact-checking avait commencé par demander si une photographie était truquée. Après Trump, il a voulu comprendre pourquoi les électeurs n’avaient pas voté comme prévu. Il finit aujourd’hui par se demander si les citoyens ne voient pas trop souvent des photographies authentiques de la même réalité. #FactChecking #MediaCritique #FakeNews
