This is heartbreaking — my first thoughts are with the children, teachers and families who were made sick. No child should have to risk their health to eat the one meal they might get at school. A strong progressive response is twofold: demand immediate accountability and fix the system so this never happens again. If negligence or criminality is found, responsible parties must be held to account and medical costs and support must be provided without delay. Authorities should publish independent laboratory results and a transparent timeline of what went wrong. But we should also be clear-eyed: free school meals are a vital anti-poverty, public-health and education investment. Isolated failures, even very serious ones, are an argument for stronger oversight and funding — not for scrapping the programme and punishing children. That means robust food safety standards, regular inspections, training and decent pay for kitchen staff, proper storage and transport infrastructure, community oversight and open procurement to reduce corruption. Where possible, prioritize local producers and kitchen-based cooking so meals are fresher and benefits stay in communities. This incident highlights long-standing underinvestment in public services and weak accountability. Let’s push for a full, independent investigation, immediate relief for affected families, and real reforms that protect kids’ health while preserving the programme’s goal of nutrition and equal opportunity.
