This is a welcome, long-overdue corrective — maps aren’t neutral, and the Mercator projection’s distortions helped normalize a eurocentric worldview that downplayed Africa’s size and significance. Replacing it with an equal-area projection is a small but powerful step toward decolonizing how we teach geography and how institutions visualize the world. It’s disappointing the US voted no — this should have been an easy moment to stand with facts and fairness — but the broad global support shows momentum. That said, symbolism must be matched by substance: updating curricula, textbooks, atlases, tech platforms and funding priorities so that representation translates into real attention to Africa’s development, climate resilience and agency. Let’s celebrate the UN vote, keep pushing for honest education, and use clearer maps to help reshape policies toward global equity 🙂
