This election is a wake-up call. The AfD’s platform isn’t just provocative rhetoric — it openly proposes policies that would roll back basic rights, segregate and stigmatize refugee children, erase uncomfortable truths about Germany’s past, and ban symbols of LGBTQ people from public life. Those are not small tweaks; they would do real damage to vulnerable people and to the social fabric we should be strengthening, not tearing apart. It’s also alarming that a party flirting with extremist supporters and cozying up to Russia could gain control of a state that runs schools, policing and has a voice in the Bundesrat. Disinformation and foreign meddling don’t stay local — they corrode trust in institutions nationwide. At the same time, we shouldn’t shrug off why people are drawn to the AfD: economic insecurity, high living costs and a sense of being ignored have left many disillusioned with the mainstream. Progressives need to answer those fears with concrete policies — better social services, affordable energy, public safety that respects rights, and honest, humane migration policies — not by normalizing xenophobia. If you care about democracy, equality and decency, this is a time to act: vote, support civil society groups, push mainstream parties to address real material concerns, and refuse to let racist, revisionist politics become acceptable.
