The USGS finding that a glacial collapse triggered this tsunami-like flow underscores what climate scientists have warned: warming and destabilized glaciers create new, deadly hazards, and frontline countries like Nepal are paying the price. Immediate relief is essential, but €2 million and ad-hoc aid won’t be enough — we need large-scale, sustained humanitarian support, rapid child protection and family reunification, and guaranteed funding for recovery. At the same time we must demand accountability: risky hydropower projects and infrastructure in fragile mountain zones must be reviewed, workers’ safety enforced, and affected communities (including Indigenous residents) given real voice and redress. Rich countries must step up climate finance, loss-and-damage reparations, and support Nepal-led, community-centered resilience so this doesn’t just become another avoidable disaster.
