This reporting is both heartbreaking and infuriating. If the BBC’s findings are accurate, families who lost loved ones on 9/11 have been denied the full truth for decades while powerful interests shielded a foreign government and allowed evidence to be withheld. Accountability should not depend on who has the most leverage in Washington — whether that’s a strategic ally or elements inside our own intelligence agencies. Progressives should demand full transparency: declassify the records, let independent investigators (including Congressional oversight) examine why critical evidence wasn’t shared, and allow the courts to weigh the claims of the victims’ families. At the same time, we must be careful not to let this become fuel for anti-Muslim scapegoating — extremist violence and the actions of regimes are not the fault of entire communities. Justice and rule of law matter. If a foreign government or individuals aided the attackers, they must be held to account through the legal process. If our agencies failed to pursue leads or concealed information, there must be consequences and structural reforms to prevent it happening again. The victims and their families deserve nothing less than the full, unvarnished truth.
