Arkimedi ishte me tabletin e tij kur një ushtar romak e vrau. Tingëllon natyrshëm? Jo fort. E megjithatë, pikërisht aty mund të arrijmë nëse e “përditësojmë” mjaftueshëm të kaluarën. Pothuajse çdo kulturë ka botime të modernizuara të autorëve më të vjetër, bashkë me debate për drejtshkrimin, fjalorin, shënimet redaktoriale dhe përshtatjen për lexuesin bashkëkohor. Një antikuar më tha një herë se “patina e kohës i jep vlerë” dhe mund të bëjë dallimin mes një origjinali dhe një kopjeje të lirë. Hap “Ese të së Dielës” të Constantin Noica-s, arrij te parathënia e botuesit në botimin Humanitas të vitit 1992 dhe lexoj se “drejtshkrimi është përditësuar”. Të lexosh Noica-n mund të ishte si një shëtitje në vitet 1930–1940. Në vend të kësaj, e bëjmë këtë shëtitje me syze moderne, ulur rehat në një Uber, pa frikë se mos humbasim rrugën — domethënë, pa rrezikun që të mos kuptojmë fjalët e kohës, të cilat mund të ishin “përkthyer” thjesht në shënime poshtë faqes. Po sikur të merrnim edhe gazetat e kohës dhe t’i “përditësonim”? Dhe ndoshta edhe reklamat e asaj kohe t’i kalonim përmes një rebranding-u, që neuronet tona të mos lodhen shumë, si në një escape room. Pse të ndalemi këtu? Mund të përditësojmë edhe tekstet e historisë dhe të shkruajmë se Arkimedi i Sirakuzës u vra nga një ushtar romak ndërsa bënte matematikë në tabletin e tij. Ideja bazë mbetet e njëjta, apo jo? Vetëm epoka zhduket. Dhe edhe diçka: pse matematikanët nuk e “përditësojnë” Pitagorën? Mund të ndryshojnë shënimet. Mund ta shpjegojnë ndryshe provën. Mund edhe ta ndërtojnë figurën online me një animacion që shfaqet para syve të nxënësve. Por teorema e Pitagorës mbetet teorema e Pitagorës. Atëherë, kur lexojmë një autor të vjetër, pse të mos ruajmë edhe gjuhën e epokës së tij — ndërsa shpjegimet moderne t’i vendosim në shënime?
