Korona-aikana toteutetut yhteiskuntasulut eivät perustuneet tosiasioille tai asiantuntija-arvioille, vaan poliittisille virhearvioinneille ja etunäkökohdille. Maaliskuussa 2020 Kiinasta saadut tiedot olivat ristiriidassa sen oletuksen kanssa, että koronaviruksen leviäminen muodostaisi erityisen vaaratilanteen. Kiinan luvut osoittivat, että koronavirusaalto ei suinkaan levinnyt ”eksponentiaalisesti”, vaan se laantui oppikirjojen mukaisen epidemian käyrän mukaisesti, kuten kaikki flunssa-aallot. Lisäksi Kiina eristi vuonna 2020 vain muutamia kaupunkeja sen sijaan, että olisi sulkenut koko maan. Vakavat hengitystiesairaudet saavuttivat huippunsa viikolla 2.–8. maaliskuuta 2020 ja laskivat sen jälkeen. Taustalla olevat tartunnat vähenivät vielä aikaisemmin, noin 26. helmikuuta 2020 lähtien. Esimerkiksi Saksassa sairaaloiden käyttöaste laski historiallisen alhaiselle tasolle. Viranomaiset ja poliitikot olivat tietoisia kaikista näistä tosiasioista, minkä vuoksi asiantuntijat varoittivat nimenomaisesti pakkotoimenpiteistä vielä 19. maaliskuuta 2020, kun harhaanjohtavat kuvat Bergamosta alkoivat kiertää. Kaikki tuolloiset tiedot ja asiakirjat osoittavat kiistattomasti, että rajojen sulkemiset, sulkutoimet, päiväkotien ja koulujen sulkemiset, maskipakko sekä mielenosoitus- ja kontaktikiellot olivat poliittisia virhepäätöksiä, jotka olivat räikeässä ristiriidassa maaliskuussa 2020 vallinneen kliinisen tilanteen kanssa ja yhtä lailla ristiriidassa asiantuntijasuositusten kanssa. Ruotsi, Etelä-Dakota, Japani, Etelä-Korea, Tansania, Burundi ja monet muut valtiot eivät määränneet sulkutoimia ja selvisivät tilanteesta hyvin. Ruotsi oli ainoa eurooppalainen maa, joka vastusti kansainvälistä painostusta, seurasi omia asiantuntijoitaan ja luopui sulkutoimenpiteistä tai maskipakosta. Ruotsin ylimääräinen ikäkorjattu kokonaiskuolleisuus oli vuosina 2020–2023 kaikista eurooppalaisista maista alhaisin. Näiden tosiasioiden valossa ei ole epäilystäkään siitä, että monien eurooppalaisten maiden koronapolitiikka päätettiin tosiasioiden vastaisesti ja että se on aiheuttanut mittaamattomia vahinkoja. Avoimeksi jää, johtuivatko virhepäätökset tahallisuudesta, tavallisesta huolimattomuudesta vai törkeästä huolimattomuudesta. Toisin kuin kiistattomat tosiasiat, toimijoiden motiivit ovat edelleen kiistanalaisia.
