In questo momento, il governo e i suoi complici violano sistematicamente il Primo Emendamento per mettere a tacere gli artisti. Chiudono istituzioni come il Kennedy Center, tagliano i fondi ai musei e al National Endowment for the Arts, censurano libri e cancellano programmi televisivi da chi si esprime apertamente. È davvero grave. E tutto questo viene permesso da aziende codarde. Non farò nomi adesso. Ma sono onorata di passare il microfono ad artisti e attivisti che continuano a far sentire la propria voce e a cantare, affinché possiamo essere ispirati a ribellarci. Essere qui è un atto di speranza, e voi tutti mi date speranza. Questi diritti sono per tutti, per tutti. E dobbiamo difenderli per tutti. Anche se non li condividiamo. Non si tratta di Democratici o Repubblicani, di destra o di sinistra. Si tratta di giusto o sbagliato. Ed è sbagliato. È sbagliato che le persone vengano attaccate e definite terroristi per aver esercitato i propri diritti e le proprie libertà. È ora che gli americani di tutto il Paese, di tutto lo spettro politico, che hanno a cuore queste libertà, si alzino in piedi, in modo creativo e non violento, per difendere questi diritti, finché ne abbiamo la possibilità. E dobbiamo farlo ora. Perché se non lo facciamo, non avremo più alcun diritto da difendere.
