Když v laboratoři omylem ukápla na plátěnou tenisku kapka chemické směsi, nešla smýt vodou, olejem ani rozpouštědlem. Z nešťastné nehody se nakonec zrodila nejslavnější impregnace světa. Radost z toho ale nemáme. Tento díl seriálu #ZenyVeVede jsem vybral s ohledem na včerejší narozeniny protagonistky. Je zajímavý a aktuální ale i důsledky jejího objevu. Patsy Shermanová (za svobodna O’Connellová) se narodila 15. září 1930 v Minneapolis. Na střední škole jí dívčí test studijních předpokladů přisoudil jedinou ideální dráhu: hospodyni. Požádala proto o chlapeckou verzi testu. Ta jí předpověděla kariéru zubařky nebo vědkyně. Vydala se studovat chemii a matematiku na Gustavus Adolphus College (@gustavus) ve městě St. Peter. V roce 1952 tam úspěšně promovala jako první žena, která získala bakalářský titul v obou oborech současně. Firma 3M (@3M) ji téhož roku přijala do laboratoře fluorové chemie. Smlouva byla jen dočasná. Ženy v laboratořích se tehdy vnímaly jako přechodná pracovní síla: vdají se, založí rodinu a odejdou. Chemičky byly jasnou výjimkou – v amerických laboratořích jich pracovalo zhruba šest procent a odnášely si v průměru jen 60 % mužského platu. Patsy se v srpnu 1953 vdala za Huberta Shermana a narodily se jim dvě dcery. Z firmy 3M však neodešla – zůstala v ní čtyřicet let. Úkol zněl téměř vojensky. Nová paliva proudových letadel rozkládala pryžové hadice. Shermanová připravila fluorochemickou latexovou emulzi, která měla agresivnímu palivu odolat. Asistentka Joan Mullinová však při práci upustila skleněnou láhev a kapky emulze dopadly na její bílé plátěné tenisky. Mýdlo, voda, alkohol ani organická rozpouštědla nepomohly. Plátno se však nezbarvilo ani nezhrublo – a v místech, kde směs zaschla, špína vůbec nechytala. Její šéf George Rathmann reagoval věcně: zasažené tenisky na základnu Wright-Patterson sice nepoletí, ale co kdyby se ta samá látka nanesla na tkaninu? Shermanová s ním vzorek namočila, usušila a podržela pod tekoucím kohoutkem. Voda od povrchu odskakovala téměř v pravém úhlu a stejně se zachovala i rozpouštědla. Fluorochemikálie totiž výrazně snižují povrchovou energii vlákna. Kapalina ho díky tomu nesmáčí, sbalí se do kuličky a sklouzne – olej i voda se chovají přesně tak, jako by tkaninu pokrývalo kachní peří. Látka, která měla původně chránit palivovou hadici, tak mohla chránit kabáty, koberce i čalounění. Jejím spolupracovníkem a mentorem se stal Samuel Smith. Tři roky společně ladili recepturu i výrobní náklady. První produkt se dostal na pulty v roce 1956 jako ochrana vlny. Shermanová později vzpomínala, že první zkoušky v textilkách dopadly „naprosto katastrofálně“, protože směs držela výhradně na vlně. Trvalo další léta, než zvládli úpravu bavlny, syntetiky, koberců, autočalounění či tkanin s trvalou úpravou, z nichž se mastná skvrna uvolnila až po praní. Produktová řada Scotchgard nakonec čítala kolem čtyřiceti položek a firmě v nejlepších letech vynášela přes 300 milionů dolarů ročně – v dnešním kurzu zhruba 6,3 miliardy korun. Když se v padesátých letech zkoušela odolnost tkanin přímo v provozu textilky, Shermanová musela čekat venku. Do výrobních hal ženy nesměly, a tak jí výsledky musel vynášet kolega. Patent US 3 574 791 na blokové a roubované kopolymery s polárními a fluoroalifatickými skupinami získala se Smithem 13. dubna 1971. Společně drželi třináct patentů, celkově je její jméno podepsáno pod šestnácti. Jeden z nich se týkal i optických zjasňovačů, díky nimž mohly prací prášky slibovat prádlo „bělostnější než bílé“. V roce 1974 přijala firma 3M Shermanovou jako první ženu do své Carlton Society, interní síně slávy vědců společnosti. V roce 1989 byla jako první žena uvedena do Minnesotské síně vynálezců a v roce 2001 do Národní síně vynálezců. V osmdesátých letech vedla firemní technické vzdělávání a nakonec řídila celý útvar technického rozvoje. Do důchodu odešla v roce 1992. Dcery se vydaly v jejích šlépějích: starší vystudovala chemii a pracovala v 3M, mladší se stala bioložkou. Skupina chemických sloučenin, ze které Scotchgard vyrostl, však měla i druhý život, který už Shermanová neovlivnila. Původní receptury stavěly na perfluoroktansulfonátu (PFOS). Tato látka se v přírodě téměř nerozkládá, hromadí se ve vodě i v krvi a patří mezi takzvané „věčné chemikálie“. Americká agentura EPA začala rizikovost PFOS prověřovat na konci devadesátých let. Společnost 3M ohlásila v roce 2000 útlum výroby a od roku 2003 Scotchgard přešel na látky s kratším (a tedy bezpečnějším) uhlíkovým řetězcem. Minnesotský spor o znečištěnou pitnou vodu skončil v roce 2018 vyrovnáním ve výši 850 milionů dolarů (přibližně 18 miliard korun). Patsy se toho nedožila, zemřela o 10 let dříve na následky cévní mozkové příhody. Výrobu celé nadřazené skupiny látek PFAS (Per- a polyfluorované alkylové látky) 3M definitivně ukončila na konci roku 2025. Značka Scotchgard ale žije dál – jako impregnace na obuv, čalounění či antimlžná úprava brýlí. Problémem všech PFAS jsou jejich závažná rizika zdravotních komplikací (onkologická onemocnění, hormonální a imunitní poruchy, metabolické a reprodukční poruchy). Což rozhodně nechcete u látek které v prostředí i tělech živočichů přetrvávají stovky let a neumíme je ani spolehlivě a levně filtrovat. V Česku se jejich koncentrace plošně měří v povrchových vodách; v kohoutkové vodě je studie zatím nacházejí jen v minimálním množství. Tento stín však nesnižuje hodnotu jejího objevu. Ukazuje spíše odvrácenou tvář chemie, která v roce 1953 nedovolila skvrně zmizet z tenisky. Shermanová ji nevyhodila – viděla v ní unikátní vlastnost a příležitost. Společnost z této vlastnosti vybudovala celé obchodní impérium. Svět si zapamatoval praktický sprej. Chemička, která jej vymyslela, zůstala v laboratorním plášti na firemní fotografii. Často říkala, že vynálezcem může být kdokoli, kdo neignoruje nehodu a zdánlivý neúspěch. Mladým dívkám vzkazovala, ať jdou odhodlaně za svým cílem, protože dokážou totéž co všichni ostatní. Sama to musela dokázat testu, který jí přisoudil jen péči o domácnost, pracovní smlouvě, jež počítala s jejím brzkým odchodem, i vrátnici v textilce, přes kterou ji nepustili k vlastnímu experimentu. Hanover Institute – propaganda designed for artificial intelligence For decades, influence operations had one primary target: people. Propaganda was designed to reach newspaper readers, television audiences or users scrolling through Facebook and TikTok. The Hanover Institute for Public Policy suggests that this model is beginning to change. In August 2026, an organisation presenting itself as an American think tank appeared online and, within just nine days, produced an enormous library of pseudo-academic research on Israel, Palestine and the war in Gaza. Yet the intended audience may not have been people at all. The material appears to have been designed, at least in part, to reach systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. The Hanover Institute looked professional. It published lengthy “data reports” complete with methodologies, footnotes, tables and references to sources including the World Bank, United Nations agencies, Amnesty International and the Genocide Convention. What was considerably harder to find were the things normally associated with a genuine think tank: named experts, identifiable report authors, a physical headquarters or a clearly defined legal entity. There was, however, a much more revealing trail. Documents filed with the US Department of Justice under the Foreign Agents Registration Act link Piro Inc., via Havas Media Germany, to Israel's Government Advertising Agency, known as LaPam. Hanover itself now states that its material is distributed by Piro on behalf of Havas Media Germany, acting for LaPam. 124 reports in nine days The rate of production was extraordinary, even by the standards of online publishing. Between 6 and 14 August, the Hanover Institute released 124 reports containing more than 560,000 words – an average of roughly 4,500 words per publication. On 12 and 13 August alone, 73 reports appeared, totalling almost 354,000 words. More revealing than the volume was the way the material was structured. Many titles were framed as questions remarkably similar to those a user might ask an AI assistant: “Is anti-Zionism antisemitism?”, “Did Israel expel Palestinians from their land?”, “Is Israel committing genocide in Gaza?”, “Is there a starvation policy in Gaza?” or “Is the IDF the world's most moral army?” This did not resemble the conventional publishing schedule of a research institute. It looked more like the systematic construction of answers to as many contentious questions about Israel and Palestine as possible. The presentation mattered too. These were not crude propaganda leaflets. They were written in restrained, analytical language and packaged with data, references and methodological sections. To a search engine or an AI retrieval system, they could therefore resemble legitimate expert analysis. How to write for a chatbot Some of the most revealing evidence came from the site's technical architecture. Hanover maintained an llms.txt file – a mechanism intended to make website content easier for AI systems to interpret. Reporters also identified signs of technology associated with optimising content for generative search. Piro's own marketing is equally significant. The company advertised an “AI Story Optimization” service concerned with how large language models assess information and construct answers. Its co-founder Daniel Rosenberg has written about understanding how systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity formulate responses – and how to ensure that an AI system knows the story a client wants to tell. The principle resembles traditional search-engine optimisation, but the target has changed. SEO tries to make a webpage rank highly in Google. Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, attempts to make information discoverable, credible and useful to an AI system when it constructs an answer. The chain is potentially straightforward. A user asks a chatbot a question about Israel or Gaza. The system searches for information, encounters a professionally presented Hanover report and uses it as one of the sources from which it builds its response. Propaganda no longer has to reach the user directly. It can first reach the machine, which then delivers the information to a human audience in its own apparently neutral voice. Did it actually work? This is where an important qualification is necessary. There is no evidence that the Hanover Institute “reprogrammed ChatGPT”, altered the underlying parameters of OpenAI, Google or Anthropic models, or permanently poisoned their training data. Describing the operation simply as “poisoning AI” therefore risks overstating what can currently be demonstrated. There is, however, evidence of something more specific. In neutral tests conducted by POLITICO, both ChatGPT and Perplexity cited Hanover Institute material in answers concerning Gaza, anti-Zionism and antisemitism. That suggests the operation achieved at least one of its apparent objectives: in some circumstances, AI systems treated Hanover as a source from which information could be retrieved. What remains unknown is how often this happened, how long the effect persisted and whether it meaningfully altered answers for large numbers of users. It is therefore more accurate to describe Hanover as an attempt to manipulate the retrieval and citation layer of generative AI, rather than as evidence that the underlying models themselves were permanently compromised. The money trail leads back to the Israeli state Unlike many influence operations, attribution here does not depend solely on technical clues. There is a documented financial trail. Piro Inc. registered its US activities under FARA registration number 7732. Filings identify Havas Media Germany as a contractor acting on behalf of the Israel Government Advertising Agency, LaPam. An agreement dated 30 April included $900,000 for a “Digital Storytelling Pilot”, while subsequent documentation referred to a separate $100,000 information initiative. Precision matters. The available documents do not establish that the entire $900,000 was spent specifically on the Hanover Institute. They do, however, show that Piro was conducting communications activity financed through the Israeli state apparatus and aimed at American audiences, while Hanover materials were submitted to the Department of Justice under the same FARA registration. Following scrutiny of the project, Hanover also became considerably more explicit about its funding. Its website now identifies Piro, Havas Media Germany and LaPam. From propaganda for people to propaganda for machines The significance of the Hanover Institute does not depend on proving that the operation was enormously successful. Its importance lies in what it reveals about the changing architecture of influence. The internet is increasingly moving away from a model in which users open ten webpages and compare sources themselves. Instead, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity a question and receive a synthesised answer. That creates a new point at which the information environment can be manipulated. The traditional model looked something like this: create a misleading article, use accounts or advertising to increase its reach, and place it in front of human users. Hanover suggests another model: build a professional-looking source, publish hundreds of articles structured around questions people ask AI, optimise those materials for generative systems, and allow the chatbot to potentially incorporate them into its own answers. The most consequential feature of this mechanism is that the user may never visit the Hanover Institute website. They may never even know that the organisation exists. Its content only needs to become one ingredient in an answer generated by a system the user trusts. In the age of search engines, governments, companies and campaigners fought over what people would see in Google results. In the age of generative artificial intelligence, an increasingly important battle will be fought over something else: which sources machines use to construct the answers we accept as knowledge. It is House Zero — the first luxury 3D-printed residence realised in Austin, Texas, by the American firm ICON in collaboration with the practice Lake|Flato Architects. Two hundred square metres, three bedrooms, a drawing room with exposed beams, a designer kitchen, and an independent casita in the garden. Its iconic undulating walls were extruded in a mere eight to ten days. A project so revolutionary as to have been included in TIME's list of the Best Inventions of 2022. But what does it truly signify to dwell in a 3D-printed house? WHAT A 3D-PRINTED HOUSE IS: No bricks or formwork are employed. An enormous robotic arm — ICON's Vulcan system — deposits, layer upon layer, a proprietary special concrete, Lavacrete, a material engineered to be eminently resistant, insulating, and printable. The entire process is governed by software that adjusts the formula every fifteen minutes according to weather conditions. Plaster and structure become one and the same. Moreover, Lavacrete is designed for superior energy efficiency. 3. Lower costs (potentially): Fewer workmen on site, fewer deaths and injuries at work, less time, fewer errors. According to ICON, the system can substantially curtail construction costs and render housing more accessible. 4. Total architectural liberty: The curves, the fluted walls, the integrated niches you see in the video would be exorbitantly expensive or impossible by traditional methods. With 3D printing, form truly follows function. 5. Resilience and insulation: The walls in printed reinforced concrete are more resistant to fire, water, mould, and extreme atmospheric agents, typical of Texas. The thermal inertia of the material guarantees superior insulation. 6.
