Különös ellentmondás, hogy miközben évszázadokon át megbélyegeztük azokat, akik eladták a testüket, ritkán tettük fel ugyanazzal az erővel a kérdést azoknak, akik megvették. Mintha az üzlet egyik fele láthatatlan lenne. A történelem azt mutatja, hogy a prostitúció mindig ott virágzott, ahol egyszerre volt jelen a hatalom, a kiszolgáltatottság és a pénz. Birodalmak emelkedtek és buktak el, vallások születtek, erkölcsi tanítások íródtak, törvények ezrei léptek életbe – de ez a jelenség túlélte mindet. Talán azért, mert nem önmagában létezik. Csupán tükör. Tükör, amelyben meglátjuk a társadalmi egyenlőtlenségeket. A nők és férfiak közötti hatalmi viszonyokat. Az emberi magányt. A vágyat, amely néha fontosabbnak bizonyul az erkölcsnél. És azt a képmutatást is, amely szerint elítéljük azt, aminek a fennmaradásához mi magunk is hozzájárulunk. Lehet vitatkozni arról, hogy a prostitúció szabadság vagy kizsákmányolás. Munka vagy kényszer. Jog vagy tragédia. De talán a legfontosabb kérdés nem ez. Hanem az, hogy milyen világ az, ahol egy ember számára a teste válik a legbiztosabb fizetőeszközzé, míg egy másik ember számára olyan érték, amelyért hajlandó fizetni. A prostitúció tehát nem csupán a szexualitás kérdése. Hanem egy civilizáció önarcképe. És minden kor pontosan olyan választ ad rá, amilyen maga az ember.
