In Ommen staan zo'n 60 tot 70 boeren klaar om in actie te komen als het nodig is. Al ruim 85 jaar kent brandweer Ommen de bosbrandweer: boeren uit de regio die giertanks klaar hebben staan, gevuld met ongeveer 8000 liter water. In het geval van een natuurbrand, kunnen zij, in samenwerking met de brandweer, een 'natte stoplijn' maken. Dit betekent dat ze de begroeiing zo nat maken, dat het vuur zich niet verder kan uitbreiden. Ook kunnen ze het gebied bewaken, om te zorgen dat een brand niet verder oplaait. Ze werken altijd op een veilige plek, uit de rook. Sommige boeren bewaren hiervoor zelfs hun oude giertanks, omdat die klein en wendbaar zijn in vergelijking met de nieuwere modellen. Dat is ideaal op de smalle paden in de natuur. De laatste keer dat bosbrandweer Ommen werd ingezet, is al meer dan 25 jaar geleden. Momenteel zijn er zo'n 60 tot 70 boeren lid van de bosbrandweer – sommigen van hen hebben dus nog nooit een inzet meegemaakt. Vaak wordt het doorgegeven van vader op zoon.
