AFRICA DAILY REPORT — 16 SEPTEMBER 2026 Coverage: key developments reported during the previous 24 hours 1. DR CONGO — Ebola outbreak remains severe despite signs of progress Importance: 10/10 — Critical The UN says there are encouraging signs in the fight against the Ebola outbreak, but it is still too early to declare that the epidemic has peaked. More than 7,200 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths have been recorded across seven provinces. Daily infections have declined from around 120 at the mid-August peak to roughly 80, but North Kivu remains particularly alarming, with 555 new cases reported there in the past 21 days. DR CONGO — Protests and clashes over proposed constitutional changes Importance: 9/10 — Very High Police used tear gas and warning shots as opposition protests spread across Kinshasa and other cities against proposed constitutional changes. Opponents fear the changes could open the way for President Félix Tshisekedi to seek a third term. The political confrontation adds another layer of instability while the country simultaneously faces the Ebola epidemic and conflict in the east. SOUTH AFRICA / UNITED STATES — Washington imposes new visa restrictions Importance: 9/10 — Very High U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new visa-restriction policy targeting certain foreign nationals from South Africa. Washington says the measures concern people linked to uncompensated land seizures, racial discrimination or violence against ethnic minorities. The move marks another deterioration in U.S.–South African relations following disputes over land reform, racial policy and Pretoria's foreign policy. EGYPT / RED SEA — Sisi and Saudi crown prince focus on security of strategic shipping routes Importance: 9/10 — Very High Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stressed the need to protect freedom and security of navigation through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb. The talks come amid escalating Houthi military activity and growing threats to one of the world's most important maritime corridors. Egypt has a particularly strong economic interest because disruption of Red Sea traffic directly affects Suez Canal revenues. DJIBOUTI — Yemen conflict drives growing refugee pressure across the Red Sea Importance: 8/10 — High Escalating fighting in Yemen is pushing more civilians toward Djibouti. More than 2,000 Yemenis are already there, while nearly 94,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen. A fuel shortage is temporarily slowing sea crossings, but the International Organization for Migration expects more people to attempt the journey once fuel becomes available. Djibouti's capacity to absorb additional arrivals could come under increasing pressure. SOUTH AFRICA — Seven women's deaths trigger major investigation and national concern Importance: 8/10 — High South African police are investigating the deaths of seven women whose bodies have been discovered over the past two months in and around Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg. Authorities have not yet established whether the killings are linked to a single perpetrator. President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised a thorough investigation. The case is intensifying public concern over South Africa's exceptionally high levels of violent crime and gender-based violence. Authorities say the operation followed a months-long investigation into a wider criminal network. The case is significant because West and Central Africa are increasingly being used not only as drug-transit corridors but also as production hubs for synthetic narcotics. Most Black women murdered in America are not killed by a distant “political villain.” They are killed by men in their own communities — often men police already knew. Newsrooms chase the rare case that fits the script. Everyday street crime does not. Cameras stay on the exception. Families bury the rule. Honesty is not hatred. It is the only way the funerals stop. Fewer revolving-door releases. More prosecutions. Fewer lectures about the wrong enemy. https://x.com/GOP_is_Gutless/status/2099531835940172174
Who Kills Whom? There is no single international database that directly compares “women who kill children” with “men who kill women.” I therefore used a triangulation method: systematic research on child homicide, international homicide statistics from UNODC, and detailed national homicide data from the FBI. The figures are not merged into one artificial global statistic; instead, they are used to see whether the same pattern appears across different sources. A systematic review of 126 studies from 44 countries found that parents were responsible for a median 56.5% of child homicides. For children under one year, parents were responsible for approximately 77.8%. Mothers were particularly prominent among perpetrators of killings of infants (Stöckl et al., 2017). That is remarkable. Women are relatively strongly represented when the homicide victim is a very young child. But this is where the sensational version of the story falls apart. It does not mean that women kill more children than men kill women. Men commit the overwhelming majority of homicides. In the FBI’s 2019 data, there were 1,647 male offenders who killed female victims in single-victim/single-offender cases. By comparison, female-perpetrated child homicide was far smaller. (Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI], 2019). UNODC similarly reports that men and boys accounted for 81% of global homicide victims in 2021, while women and girls accounted for 19%. Yet women and girls were disproportionately killed by intimate partners or family members: such killings accounted for 56% of female homicide victims (UNODC, 2023). So what does the evidence actually tell us? Men dominate homicide statistics. But female homicide has a strikingly different pattern: women are disproportionately represented among perpetrators when the victim is an infant, while men account for vastly more homicide overall and for a much broader range of victims. Perhaps the real lesson is uncomfortable for both sides: statistics do not support a simple “men are killers, women are victims” story. Nor do they support reversing that story. Reality is considerably more complicated — and considerably more interesting. References — APA 7th edition Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2019). "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" - Gloria Steinem … but women do need a handyman - and nothing else. “Wanted: Husband, Preferably With a Toolbox” Latvia has one of Europe’s most remarkable gender imbalances. Women constitute about 54% of the population—roughly 116 women for every 100 men. And this is not primarily a story about fewer boys being born. It is a story about men dying earlier. In 2025, life expectancy at birth was approximately 72.3 years for Latvian men, compared with 81.0 years for women. Latvia therefore has one of the largest male-female life-expectancy gaps in the OECD. Among the elderly, the consequences are striking: women dramatically outnumber men, leaving many older women living without a male partner. This produces an intriguing—and slightly ironic—market response. Latvia has businesses advertised as “husband for an hour”, providing plumbing, electrical work, repairs, furniture assembly and other household services traditionally associated with the male partner. There is no solid evidence that Latvia’s gender imbalance caused these businesses to become popular, so the connection should not be presented as established fact. But the phenomenon illustrates a much bigger point. Demography is not just about population pyramids and government statistics. It changes the structure of everyday life—and eventually the economy. Latvia is simultaneously experiencing low fertility, population ageing, high male mortality and long-term population decline. In 2025, only about 11,900 children were born while more than 26,000 people died. Migration adds further pressure. The “husband for an hour” may therefore be more than an amusing curiosity. It could be a small, almost comical symptom of a much more serious transformation: when demographic structures change, markets adapt. And sometimes the first sign of a demographic crisis is not found in a government report—but in the services people suddenly find themselves needing to buy.
