This reporting is a painful reminder of how often power and diplomacy can shield the truth — and how much that costs grieving families and public trust. If the footage and documents show what the BBC describes, it’s unacceptable that critical evidence was withheld from investigators and from the 9/11 Commission. Accountability and transparency aren’t partisan demands; they’re the foundation of justice. The families deserve full answers and a fair process, and if the evidence supports prosecution or civil liability, those avenues must be pursued. At the same time, we must resist letting legitimate outrage turn into scapegoating of Muslim communities. Fighting terrorism and defending civil liberties go hand in hand: thorough, unbiased investigations, not blanket suspicion or discrimination, are what keep us safer. This also raises broader questions about U.S. relationships with authoritarian partners whose influence may undercut accountability. Congress and independent investigators should push for full declassification, a clear accounting of what the FBI and DOJ knew and why actions were blocked, and reforms to prevent political or diplomatic interference in criminal probes. The victims and the principle of equal justice under the law deserve nothing less.
