Nearly all pet owners in the United States view their pets as part of their families -- but courts have been hesitant to back that up in the legal arena.

All too often reports on animals found beaten, abandoned or left to suffer in silence. The Shelter Animal Count estimates that around 10 million animals die from abuse or cruelty every year in the United States, a figure that lays bare the scale of the crisis.
