Column: Vandaag ben ik jarig Max von Kreyfelt Vandaag ben ik jarig. Een verjaardag die dit jaar minder vanzelfsprekend voelt dan anders. In januari kreeg ik een herseninfarct. Alsof mijn hoofd, dat zich doorgaans vooral bezighoudt met politiek, media en bestuurlijke dwaasheid, plotseling besloot zelf breaking news te worden. Daarna volgde mijn fietsongeluk tijdens een afdaling in Luxemburg. Opnieuw werd mijn hoofd onderwerp van medische zorg, ditmaal met een directheid die zelfs mijn scherpste columns niet bereiken. Het lichaam beschikt over een merkwaardig gevoel voor timing. Net wanneer je plannen maakt, een camper koopt en denkt dat de wereld op je wacht, trekt het zonder overleg aan de noodrem. Wat mij in deze maanden bijzonder heeft geraakt, is de enorme betrokkenheid van mijn volgers, lezers en sympathisanten. De berichten, telefoontjes, praktische hulp en oprechte belangstelling kwamen soms van mensen die ik persoonlijk nauwelijks ken, maar die zich kennelijk al jarenlang met mijn werk verbonden voelen. Dat is een vorm van rijkdom die niet op een bankrekening verschijnt en toch onbetaalbaar blijkt wanneer het leven plotseling wankelt. Daarvoor wil ik jullie vandaag bedanken. Niet alleen voor de steun na mijn herseninfarct en het fietsongeluk, maar ook voor de dagelijkse betrokkenheid bij de onderwerpen die ik aansnijd. Voor het lezen, reageren, delen, tegenspreken en soms hartgrondig met mij oneens zijn. Zelfs verontwaardiging is een teken dat woorden nog ergens terechtkomen. Het echte faillissement van een columnist is niet kritiek, maar stilte. Mijn columns gaan vaak over macht, hypocrisie, bestuurlijk falen en de wonderlijke Haagse gewoonte om problemen eerst te veroorzaken en daarna een commissie te benoemen die onderzoekt waarom de burger zo boos is. Dat levert niet altijd vrienden op. Wel lezers die begrijpen dat democratie zonder tegenspraak verandert in een persconferentie met vooraf goedgekeurde vragen. Ook de mensen over wie ik schrijf, dragen bij aan mijn werk. Soms door te reageren, vaker door precies datgene te doen waarvan je als columnist denkt: dit kan ik zelf niet satirischer verzinnen. Mijn dankbaarheid strekt zich daarom zelfs uit tot de politieke en bestuurlijke hofleveranciers van mijn columns. Zonder hun onvermoeibare inzet zou mijn toetsenbord aanzienlijk meer rust krijgen. Vandaag vier ik dus niet alleen dat ik opnieuw een jaar verder ben. Ik vier dat ik er nog ben, dat ik nog schrijf en dat jullie nog lezen. Een mens ontdekt pas hoe groot zijn kring werkelijk is wanneer hij zelf even niet meer stevig in het midden kan staan. Dank voor jullie betrokkenheid.
