Queen Maria understood how important it was for Romania to be known and respected beyond its borders. A century later, preserving this memory reminds us of the responsibility to continue what those before us built. In this spirit, I spoke about the importance of preserving identity and maintaining contact with Romania, as well as how the experience of Romanians who have thrived in a much more competitive society can be used to do good both here and in Romania. The Romanian state has long been asking how it can better collaborate with various structures, more or less private. The experience of the Romanian community in the United States can be important in this effort as well. It is essential to have, at the same time, a correct view of Romania. Despite many shortcomings that Romanians in Romania rightly feel, such as corruption, the poor functioning of some institutions, and everything else we know, we must understand well where we came from and objectively see the significant progress Romania has made in recent years, especially since joining the European Union 20 years ago. Romania has enormous potential: through the qualification of people, through a very dynamic private sector, and through the reasonable level of the education system, at least in a few important fields. Romanian society has accumulated a certain level of expertise in many areas. I hope for years ahead where we can consolidate this expertise and stabilize it so that it becomes a self-sufficient society. This is the goal for the coming years.
