Dat klinkt als een gewichtige economische vergelijking, maar oppervlakte en toegevoegde waarde hebben geen voorgeschreven verhouding tot elkaar. Een advocatenkantoor op de Zuidas kan op duizend vierkante meter meer BBP produceren dan een boer op honderd hectare. Daaruit volgt niet dat advocaten grond honderdduizend keer efficiënter gebruiken. De ene activiteit produceert juridische diensten, de andere voedsel. De benodigde hoeveelheid grond is onderdeel van het productieproces. Trek de redenering door en het probleem wordt nog duidelijker. Natuur gebruikt nogal veel grond en levert ongeveer 0% van het BBP. Een hectare bos verliest volgens deze maatstaf vrijwel iedere economische vergelijking met een hectare kantoren, distributiecentrum of datacenter. Wie BBP per hectare als maatstaf kiest, heeft daarmee een uitstekend economisch argument geformuleerd om zowel boerenland als natuur vol te bouwen.
