Am discutat despre România, despre legătura cu țara și despre felul în care experiența românilor din diaspora poate contribui la ceea ce construim împreună. Anterior, am dezvelit plăcuța „The Queen Marie of Romania Corner”, la 100 de ani de la vizita Reginei Maria în Statele Unite. Regina Maria a înțeles cât de important era ca România să fie cunoscută și respectată dincolo de granițele sale. Un secol mai târziu, păstrarea acestei memorii ne amintește de responsabilitatea de a continua ceea ce au construit cei dinaintea noastră. În acest spirit, am vorbit despre importanța păstrării identității și a contactului cu România, dar și despre felul în care experiența românilor care au performat într-o societate mult mai competitivă poate fi folosită pentru a face bine și aici, și în România. Statul român își pune de multă vreme întrebarea cum poate colabora mai bine cu diverse structuri, mai mult sau mai puțin private. Experiența comunității românești din Statele Unite poate fi importantă și în acest efort. Este important să avem, în același timp, o privire corectă asupra României. În ciuda multor neajunsuri pe care românii din România le resimt pe bună dreptate, corupție, funcționarea deficitară a unor instituții și toate cele pe care le cunoaștem, trebuie să înțelegem bine de unde am plecat și să vedem cu obiectivitate progresele mari pe care România le-a făcut în ultimii ani, în special după intrarea în Uniunea Europeană, acum 20 de ani. România are un potențial uriaș: prin calificarea oamenilor, prin mediul privat foarte dinamic și prin nivelul rezonabil al sistemului de învățământ, cel puțin în câteva domenii importante. Societatea românească a acumulat un anumit nivel de expertiză în multe domenii. Îmi doresc să urmeze niște ani în care să consolidăm această expertiză, să o stabilizăm, astfel încât să fie o societate stăpână pe sine. Acesta este obiectivul pentru următorii ani.
