Neste dia no ano de 1944, 150 mil jovens foram lançados contra a "Muralha do Atlântico" de Hitler na costa francesa da Normandia, o famoso Dia D. Naquela época, a Alemanha controlava grande parte da Europa, inclusive a França. Os Aliados queriam entrar na Europa para começar a retomar o controle dos alemães. A Normandia foi escolhida porque tinha praias nas quais os Aliados podiam pousar e ficava a uma curta distância dos aviões que os Aliados tinham na Grã-Bretanha. O ataque foi uma surpresa para os alemães, planejado em segredo. Começou bem cedo, antes mesmo do nascer do sol, e envolvia três partes principais: Ataque aerotransportado, com paraquedistas lançados atrás das linhas inimigas com a missão de capturar lugares importantes, como pontes, para impedir que os alemães trouxessem reforços. Bombardeio naval, com navios no Canal da Mancha bombardeando pesadamente as defesas alemãs na costa. Isso enfraqueceria as defesas antes que as forças principais desembarcassem. E finalmente o desembarque anfíbio, com milhares de soldados desembarcando nas praias da Normandia em barcos especiais. Isso foi realmente perigoso porque eles foram atacados pelas defesas alemãs que estavam estrategicamente posicionadas ao longo da costa. Havia cinco praias onde desembarcaram, com os nomes de código Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno e Sword. Apesar de muitas dificuldades e muitas pessoas corajosas perdendo suas vidas, os Aliados conseguiram proteger as praias e avançar para a França. Estima-se que cerca de 10% dos homens que desembarcaram na Normandia neste dia 6 de junho foram mortos ou feridos. 6.6. 1944 Operace Overlord 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇨🇦🇫🇷🇵🇱🇨🇿🇦🇺🇳🇿🇳🇱🇧🇪 Podle odhadů v americké armádě sloužilo během války 66 000-160 000 Čechoameričanů. Jedním z nich byl i český rodák Leonard Ladislav Jindra (1921-?), rodné Koňkovice na Sázavsku opustil jako 16letý. Do americké armády se mladý emigrant přihlásil jako dobrovolník, s myšlenkou na maminku a dva bratry žijící v okupované vlasti. Dne 6. června 1944 se vylodil v Normandii jako vojín 2. praporu 115. pěšího pluku 29. pěší divize. Na pláži Omaha potom zažil peklo. Později vzpomínal, že jeho kamarádi, s nimiž na lodi vtipkoval, během pár minut padli. Leonard Ladislav Jindra strávil v první frontové linii dva měsíce bez přestávky. Utrpěl těžké zranění a byl operován. V týlu ve Francii pak strávil zbytek více než dvouletého nasazení v Evropě. S maminkou a bratry se nakonec setkal až po válce.
