The Norwegian-administered island group of Svalbard is affected by a climate-related drinking water crisis, as the thawing of the permafrost in the largest settlement, Longyearbyen, has led to heavy metal contamination in the drinking water, prompting the population to be warned not to drink water anymore. #Spitzbergen #Klimakrise #Trinkwasserkrise (translated)
The author of the post wrote that Longyearbyen in Norway was without drinking water due to melting permafrost and increased metal content in the water. He added that for Norway, water is a more important resource than extracting fossil fuels, and labeled the post with the tag "priceofdoingbusiness." #priceofdoingbusiness https://t.co/yL5VRuE1vy #Norveška #okolje #permafrosti #NO (translated)
The author wrote that permafrost thaw was one of the most understudied yet consequential feedbacks of climate warming, adding that this was unsurprising.
After a large rockfall at the Zugspitze, researchers warn that climate change and the thawing of permafrost threaten the stability of the Alps. #Klimawandel #Zugspitze #Alpen (translated)
The author wrote that climate change is noticeable: the permafrost in the mountains is receding, the ice is melting, and the rock is crumbling. Bavaria is therefore conducting intensive research on geohazards, climate protection, and climate adaptation. He reported that they had been at the permafrost tunnel and the Zugspitze glacier on that day. https://t.co/T3HqVwLjr4 #Klimawandel #Klimaschutz #Georisiken #DE #AT (translated)
The author wrote that climate change is noticeable in the mountains: the permafrost is retreating, the ice is melting, and the rocks are crumbling. Rising temperatures are causing the "glue of the high mountains" to thaw. To prevent dangers to life and limb, Bavaria is intensively researching geological hazards and climate protection. https://t.co/WV90h7Pma7 #Klimawandel #Umweltschutz #Bayern #DE (translated)
The thawing of Siberian permafrost could pose a serious threat to human health, as it exposes old pathogens, as demonstrated by the case of a scientist's death and related concerns about a possible outbreak of plague and other unknown infectious diseases. #mor #Sibiř #zdraví (translated)
The author wrote that a new study had examined 20,736 scientific publications on climate tipping points and estimated that several could be crossed at around 1.5 degrees of warming. They named permafrost thaw, the Greenland Ice Sheet and the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre, saying this could happen “any time soon.”
An unstable rock formation threatens the Swiss mountain village of Kandersteg due to the thawing of permafrost as a result of climate change, but the residents are not too worried thanks to good monitoring and preparatory measures. #Kandersteg #Klimaatverandering #Natuurrampen (translated)
Ukraine should more frequently attack Russian airports and refineries, which expert Mykhailo Honchar considers key to weakening Russian military infrastructure, although he regards an attack on a strategic location where Russian gas pipelines intersect as impossible due to its deep placement in permafrost and strong protection by the Russian air defense system. #Ukrajina #RuskéRafinérie #VojenskéÚtoky (translated)
The thawing of permafrost in the Arctic has caused the release of toxic metals into rivers, with levels of zinc and sulfates drastically increased, and represents a growing threat to aquatic ecosystems and rural communities. #Permafrost #CambiamentoClimatico #InquinamentoAcque (translated)
Researchers warn of further rockfalls at the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, especially due to the thawing permafrost and rising temperatures, after more than 13,000 cubic meters of rock have already fallen. #Zugspitze #Felssturz #Klimawandel (translated)
Thawing of permafrost in Alaska causes the release of toxic metals, turning pristine blue rivers acidic and rusty, creating acute ecological problems. #klimatskepromjene #Aljaska #ekologija (translated)
The still-growing problem of river pollution in the Brooks Range area of Alaska, caused by the melting of permafrost, is leading to increased levels of toxic metals, posing serious threats to local ecosystems and communities. #permafrost #ochronasrodowiska #zmianyklimatyczne (translated)
Researchers said the flood was caused by a "compound crisis" shaped by long-term warming, glacier retreat, permafrost thaw and geological instability. A 2015 earthquake is also thought to have played a role. #ClimateChange #NepalFlood #GlacialRetreat
#Monviso #permafrost #RiscaldamentoGlobale
