Mais Frank Beard, c'était justement l'autre visage du groupe. Le type qui s'appelait "Beard" dans le groupe le plus barbu de l'histoire du rock ... et qui était le seul des trois à ne pas vraiment en avoir une. Rien que ça, j'ai toujours trouvé que ça résumait assez bien le personnage. Pendant que Billy Gibbons et Dusty Hill occupaient l'image, Frank était derrière. À sa place. Pas besoin d'être devant pour être indispensable. Parce que sous les riffs de Billy et la basse de Dusty, il y avait ce truc qu'on remarque parfois seulement quand il disparaît : "le moteur". Ce groove texan sec, lourd, légèrement traînant, cette façon de donner l'impression que trois types jouaient tranquillement dans un rade poussiéreux alors qu'ils étaient capables de faire bouger un stade entier. Frank et Dusty jouaient déjà ensemble avant ZZ Top. Le blues texan n'était pas un costume qu'ils avaient enfilé pour vendre des disques : ils venaient réellement de là. Et derrière le personnage cool, il y avait aussi un homme qui avait connu les excès, la dépendance, puis qui avait réussi à se reconstruire et à revenir derrière sa batterie. C'est peut-être aussi pour ça que j'aimais tellement ZZ Top. Ils n'avaient jamais besoin de donner l'impression d'être immortels. Ils avaient simplement l'air de l'être. Dusty est parti en 2021. Aujourd'hui, c'est Frank. Et pour lui, je ne choisirai pas "Legs", "Sharp Dressed Man" ou "Gimme All Your Lovin". Je vais remettre "Jesus Just Left Chicago", en la laissant arriver juste après "Waitin' for the Bus", comme sur "Tres Hombres". Parce que cet enchaînement presque accidentel est devenu mythique chez les fans : deux morceaux différents qui finissent par donner l'impression de n'en former qu'un. Et parce que Frank Beard est lui-même crédité parmi les auteurs de "Jesus Just Left Chicago". Pour rendre hommage au type discret derrière la batterie, je trouvais ça beaucoup plus juste qu'un tube évident. Ceux qui savent, savent. RIP Frank Beard. Le Beard sans barbe.
