Women constitute about 54% of the population—roughly 116 women for every 100 men. And this is not primarily a story about fewer boys being born. It is a story about men dying earlier. In 2025, life expectancy at birth was approximately 72.3 years for Latvian men, compared with 81.0 years for women. Latvia therefore has one of the largest male-female life-expectancy gaps in the OECD. Among the elderly, the consequences are striking: women dramatically outnumber men, leaving many older women living without a male partner. This produces an intriguing—and slightly ironic—market response. Latvia has businesses advertised as “husband for an hour”, providing plumbing, electrical work, repairs, furniture assembly and other household services traditionally associated with the male partner. There is no solid evidence that Latvia’s gender imbalance caused these businesses to become popular, so the connection should not be presented as established fact. But the phenomenon illustrates a much bigger point. Demography is not just about population pyramids and government statistics. It changes the structure of everyday life—and eventually the economy. Latvia is simultaneously experiencing low fertility, population ageing, high male mortality and long-term population decline. In 2025, only about 11,900 children were born while more than 26,000 people died. Migration adds further pressure. The “husband for an hour” may therefore be more than an amusing curiosity. It could be a small, almost comical symptom of a much more serious transformation: when demographic structures change, markets adapt. And sometimes the first sign of a demographic crisis is not found in a government report—but in the services people suddenly find themselves needing to buy.

Es war ja noch etwas anderes sehr seltsam an der gestrigen Pressekonferenz des Bundeskanzlers (also genaugenommen der CDU), das kann eigentlich nicht nur mir aufgefallen sein. Ganz am Schluß. Da kam @_FriedrichMerz auf einmal - etwas zusammenhanglos - auf den Drohnenanschlag von Leipzig zu sprechen und setzte ihn in Zusammenhang mit den Landtagswahlen in Sachsen-Anhalt. Und der Zusammenhang war irgendwie so, daß er letztlich enttäuscht war, daß trotz der Verlautbarung der Bundesregierung, es seien die Russen gewesen, immer noch so viele Leute AfD und auch BSW gewählt hätten. Es klang so, als sei der gescheiterte Sprengstoffanschlag von Leipzig bzw. die Verlautbarung der Bundesregierung, das seien die Russen gewesen, aus Sicht der Bundesregierung der gamechanger im Landtagswahlkampf von Sachsen-Anhalt gewesen - und nun war man enttäuscht, daß es gar nichts gebracht hatte! Wirkten deshalb in Berlin alle so überrascht, nachdem das passiert war, was alle prognostiziert hatten? Ich bin ja bekanntlich jeglicher Sympathien mit dem Putin-Regime unverdächtig. Aber die Verlautbarung der Bundesregierung vor etlichen Tagen, nun habe man herausgefunden, daß es die Russen gewesen seien, kam mir ziemlich fishy 🐟vor. Ganz einfach deswegen, weil die Bundesregierung ja nicht verriet, woher sie das überhaupt wissen will, warum sie sich so sicher ist, welche Beweise oder wenigstens Indizien vorliegen. Kommuniziert wurde ganz einfach: wir wissen es jetzt, Geheimdienst und so, ihr müßt und das ganz einfach glauben! Der "Glaube" an die Bundesregierung ist ohnehin etwas erschüttert. Die Verfassungsschutzämter "wissen" ja auch immer ganz genau, welche Landesverbände der AfD "gesichert rechtsextremistisch" sind. Und liest man dann die zugrundliegenden "Gutachen" nach, handelt es sich um wirre Spekulations- und Assoziationskaskaden, getragen von maximalem Belastungseifer - als habe das "Correctiv" unter Drogen geschrieben. Ist die "Beweisführung" der Bundesregierung im Leipzig-Fall, die wir nicht kennen, am Ende gar von ähnlicher Qualität? Und selbst, wenn der Bundesregierung sehr plausible Indizien vorliegen sollten, die vernünftigerweise fast zwingend auf Rußland hindeuten: im internationalen Geheimdienstwesen sind "false-flag-Operationen" ja keine Seltenheit, sondern gewissermaßen der Regelfall. Daher müssen gerade dann, wenn auf den ersten Blick belastbare Indizien auf eine bestimmte Nation hindeuten, bei dem Geheimdiensten eigentlich eher die Alarmlampen angehen: "Aha, da will jemand, daß wir etwas Bestimmtes glauben!". So denken Dienste eigentlich. In der Pressekonferenz war die Wortwahl von Friedrich Merz so obskur: man habe eine "Zuordnung" vorgenommen. Weil man damit auch angesichts der Landtagswahl nicht mehr länger habe warten wollen! Es geht ja um die Schuldfrage und eine schwere Straftat. Wenn ein Gericht am Ende eines Verfahrens aufgrund von Beweisen von der Schuld eines Angeklagten überzeugt ist - dann nennt man das ja auch nicht "Zuordnung". Und: das Gericht fällt das Urteil, wenn entweder der Beweis erbracht ist oder herausgekommen ist, daß der Beweis nicht erbracht werden kann – und nicht, wenn es "nicht mehr länger warten will". Seit der gestrigen Pressekonferenz von Friedrich Merz habe ich einen Verdacht: die Bundesregierung hat möglicherweise in Wahrheit keine Ahnung, wer hinter dem Sprengstoffanschlag von Leipzig steckt, und ihre öffentliche Auskunft, man wisse jetzt, daß es die Russen gewesen seien, ist u.U. eine letztlich haltlose Behauptung "ins Blaue hinein". Und diese Behauptung wurde nicht (nur) aus außenpolitischen oder sicherheitspolitischen Erwägungen heraus getroffen - sondern, und hier wird es endgültig verrückt!, aus der Erwägung der Regierung heraus, durch so eine Behauptung den Ausgang der Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt durchgreifend beeinflussen zu können. #Politik #Bundesregierung #SachsenAnhalt
