Nel giorno dei 100 anni di San Siro, lo stadio dedicato a Meazza che tenne a battesimo Sandrino al debutto nel 1961, Mazzola se ne va: una vita per l’Inter da campione eccelso Figlio di una leggenda vivente come papà Valentino scomparso a Superga, Mazzola è riuscito nell’impossibile impresa di arrampicarsi sul suo piedistallo. Un altro mito della Grande Inter che se ne va Sembra quasi che abbia voluto sceglierlo, il giorno della sua morte, Sandro Mazzola: che ci ha lasciato oggi, 19 settembre 2026, nel giorno in cui lo stadio di San Siro che negli anni 60 e 70 lo vide eccelso e inimitabile primattore compie 100 anni; lo stadio che porta il nome di Giuseppe Meazza, altra leggenda interista, l’uomo che - guarda caso - tenne a battesimo in Serie A come allenatore proprio lui, Sandrino Mazzola, il 10 giugno 1961 in un match passato alla storia del calcio italiano: quel Juventus-Inter 9-1 in cui Angelo Moratti, papà di Massimo, in segno di protesta contro la FIGC del presidente Umberto Agnelli - en passant anche presidente della Juventus - decise di schierare la formazione De Martino, cioè la Primavera di oggi, dopo l’annullamento della vittoria a tavolino data all’Inter per l’invasione di campo che il 16 aprile aveva costretto l’arbitro Gambarotta a sospendere al 30’ del primo tempo, sullo 0-0, la partita al Comunale di Torino. La FIGC del presidente Umberto Agnelli accolse il ricorso del presidente della Juventus Umberto Agnelli e in barba a ogni precedente in materia dispose la ripetizione della partita: che l’Inter, appunto, boicottò mandando in campo i ragazzi e spedendo in panchina non Helenio Herrera ma Giuseppe Meazza. L’uomo di cui San Siro che oggi compie 100 anni porta il nome. L’uomo che proprio in quell’occasione tenne a battesimo Mazzola al debutto in Serie A in cui Sandro mise la firma all’unico gol nerazzurro di una partita surreale - oggi diremmo distopica - entrata subito nella storia non proprio adamantina del nostro calcio borderline. Raccontare Mazzola a chi non ha avuto la fortuna di vederlo giocare, diciassette lunghe stagioni dal 1960 al 1977, due Coppe dei Campioni, due Coppe Intercontinentali, quattro scudetti, il titolo di campione d’Europa con l’Italia nel 1968, capocannoniere sia in Serie A (1964-65, 17 gol) sia in Coppa dei Campioni (1963-64, 7 gol), una vita per l’Inter prima da giocatore e capitano (417 partite, 116 gol), poi da dirigente prima con Fraizzoli e poi con Massimo Moratti, raccontare Mazzola a parole - dicevo - non è facile. Ma a fotografarne la grandezza tecnica basta forse una tabella, quella che vedete sotto: è tratta dall’Albo d’Oro del Pallone d’Oro e si riferisce al 1971. Un’edizione del Pallone d’Oro in cui Mazzola, a quel tempo 29enne, si piazza al secondo posto dietro Johan Cruyff e davanti a George Best: e anche se ai tempi non eravate ancora nati o eravate troppo piccoli per ricordare, che fuoriclasse immensi siano stati Cruyff dell’Ajax e Best del Manchetser United credo lo sappiate tutti. Erano, è vero, tempi d’oro per il calcio italiano: che due anni prima, nel 1969, aveva trionfato con Rivera Pallone d’Oro e Gigi Riva secondo e che di lì a due anni avrebbe portato nientemeno che un portiere, Dino Zoff, sul secondo gradino del podio tra Cruyff (vincitore) e Gerd Muller (terzo classificato). Sandro Mazzola è stato un campione unico. Numero 8 della leggendaria Grande Inter di Helenio Herrera, in cui il 9 era Peirò (e prima Di Giacomo) e il 10 Luisito Suarez, Mazzola era un ibrido unico nel suo genere capace com’era, grazie alla sue doti di tecnica e velocità, scatto e resistenza di essere al tempo stesso eccelso attaccante e eccelso centrocampista, all’occorrenza anche di fatica. Ma ancora una volta sono le immagini, più della parole, a raccontare tutto di lui. A pochi giorni dal crudele addio a Franco Baresi, leggenda del Milan, il calcio italiano s’inchina e piange Sandro Mazzola. Campione d’Europa nel 1968, vicecampione del mondo nel 1970, campione per sempre nel cuore non solo dei tifosi dell’Inter e della nazionale ma di tutti gli sportivi italiani. Capace di compiere la più difficile e grande delle imprese: salire - e rimanervi - sul piedistallo di un papà, il Valentino Mazzola scomparso a Superga, per classe, bravura e carisma inarrivabile.
