The government has been managing the narrative for 8 years that home ownership was in the hands of "vulture funds," the "rich," and the "powerful." Documentaries have even been made with that focus. Now people are discovering that housing is in the hands of small owners, many of whom – here lies the key – are middle-class families, voters for PSOE and PP, simply due to age. There was a time when people could own 2 properties. All this, even to the point of tacitly acknowledging – in light of the decree – that limiting "speculative buying" to alleged vulture funds (companies created in many cases to manage the ownership of two or three apartments) would be detrimental. A study in the Netherlands concluded that limiting purchases for investors led to an increase in rents: these companies served the purpose of buying and rehabilitating rental stock. The purchase prices did not decrease significantly with the measure, but rental prices increased due to lower market supply because no one was providing it. The narratives are unraveling: PSOE has adopted all the mantras of Podemos as an electoral strategy to absorb that space and maintain more than 100 seats, but reality always ends up knocking at the door. Spain, a country of small owners from a very specific generation: the baby boomers. The rest is rhymes and legends. (translated)
