Forget ‘superintelligence’: error-prone AI nearly sparked worldwar 3? Timnit Gebru Emily Bender https://t.co/sgvxhzScJF “The first loss of control will not look like a machine seizing power, it will look like humans quietly surrendering judgment to a system that sounds certain” #AI #Superintelligence #Technology #Nospecificcountriesarementionedinthetweet.

End of October! The new Book by Susanna Clarke From the internationally bestselling and prize-winning author of Piranesi and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, an enchanting and haunting illustrated short story full of medieval magic. A small hardback edition featuring an afterword by the author 1110 A.D. The fairy host sweeps across the North of England and the city of Durham is under siege. Wearily the Bishop of Durham, Ranulf Flambard, prepares to surrender – something which proves far more difficult than he could have imagined. His quest will lead him through a landscape of unco-operative rivers and enchanted forests to a New Castle on the banks of the River Tyne – where, with any luck, he will be received by a court of deceptive, would-be fairy queens, shape-shifting stags and a beautiful teenage Raven King. A long-lost chapter in the lore of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The Bishop of Durham Attempts to Surrender the City is an enchanting and enchanted adventure into the magic of medieval England. Praise for Susanna Clarke:‘Spellbinding’ Dua Lipa‘A miraculous and luminous feat of storytelling’ Madeline Miller‘Clarke writes with an intelligence and beauty that seems at times miraculous’ Katherine Rundell

My proposal: Ukraine and South Korea should establish a clear, voluntary surrender-and-resettlement framework for North Korean soldiers who choose to leave the war. Those who surrender should be able to request transfer to South Korea, receive security screening and protection, https://t.co/7q35tNOKUy #Ukraine #NorthKorea #SouthKorea #UA #KR #KP

AI is advancing at extraordinary speed. As we confront its rising challenges, let‘s not retreat from fundamental principles: Children must never become the test subjects for unregulated systems. Life-and-death decisions must never be surrendered to machines. Killer robots #AIethics #Killerrobots #AIrisks #Thetweetdoesnotmentionanyspecificcountries. Therefore #therearenocountrycodestoreturn.

Baghdad recast 30 September — originally a hard deadline for armed factions to surrender an estimated 6 million weapons — as the start of the regulatory process as Kataib Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba refuse to hand over what they call "resistance weapons". #Iraq #Disarmament #Militias

I CALL FOR THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT KAROL NAWROCKI. 🇵🇱 On 17 September, Nawrocki said that Poland is a nation that can lose territory but will never surrender its soul. His speech was explicitly framed around Poland’s experience of the German and Soviet invasions of 1939, so https://t.co/LHIPgJm29b #Impeachment #Poland #Nawrocki #PL

We must not believe that we are powerless. Europe is strong and even stronger with allies. We will not surrender to bullies. The West is changing beyond recognition. We do not have to follow it into a sinkhole. ❌ No war. ❌ No mass migration. ❌ No gender ideology. ❌ No surrender of our Christian heritage. Brussels wraps centralisation in a cosy blanket of pleasant-sounding words. “Common foreign policy” sounds harmless enough, until you realise it means surrendering your own national interests. When Emotion Takes the Reins A remarkable study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciencesexamined millions of books covering almost 170 years and tracked language associated with rationality—facts, conclusions, analysis and determination—against language associated with sentiment—feeling, belief and emotion. The pattern was striking. From roughly 1850 to 1980, rationality-related language steadily increased while sentiment-related language declined. Then the trend reversed. By around 2007, sentiment-related language had overtaken rationality-related language and continued rising (Scheffer et al., 2021). This does not prove that people have become less rational, nor does the study establish a single cause. But it raises an important question: what happens when trust in the institutions associated with knowledge and expertise begins to collapse? If people believe governments, experts, universities and media are corrupt or captured, “look at the data” can sound less like an appeal to reason and more like an appeal to authority. And when institutional trust declines, emotion becomes politically powerful. Anger supplies an enemy. Fear supplies urgency. Hope supplies a future. Identity supplies belonging. Could this help explain why socialism and even communism have regained some appeal among young people despite the historical record? The study cannot establish that causal link. But it is a plausible hypothesis: when politics becomes increasingly emotional, an ideology can be judged by what it promises rather than by what it has historically produced. Benjamin Franklin captured the necessary balance: “If passion drives, let reason hold the reins.” Passion is not the enemy. It is the engine of human action. The danger comes when we surrender the steering wheel. Today, algorithms, political campaigns and media incentives are exceptionally good at exploiting emotion. Outrage spreads faster than nuance. A soundbite can provoke a reaction before we have checked whether it is true.

The Individual as an Antidote to Tyranny The average person today is incapable of governing himself, which is why so many yearn for a new system. They desire external control to order their lives in ways they feel unable to manage themselves. Riddled with fear, they trade liberty for protection. Ideology recasts resentment as righteousness, while loneliness drives them to join a herd. The answer to collective madness is not collective action in the opposite direction. Chaos does not defeat chaos. As Friedrich Nietzsche observed, “Madness is something rare in individuals—but in groups, parties, peoples, and ages, it is the rule.” Think of every hero story you admire. The hero does not retreat from danger or surrender to evil. He confronts it directly and places himself in the line of fire. A well-ordered individual is not harmless or ineffectual. One competent, strong, and courageous person can carry more weight and provide more value than a mob. As Carl Jung said, “A million zeros do not add up to one.” Being well-ordered does not mean being harmless or indiscriminately nice. It means possessing judgment, competitive instinct, the capacity for force, and a desire for achievement. The question is what those qualities serve: money, power, and lust—or love, family, and God? This kind of person is an antidote to tyranny. If no strong internal ordering principle exists, a movement, leader, ideology, or state will fill the vacuum from the outside. The well-ordered individual is not incapable of rage, vanity, resentment, cowardice, or cruelty. Awareness of these shadow aspects helps prevent ideological capture and frees him from the seductive belief that “they are evil and we are good.” Anyone seeking a solution to increasing social insanity must recognize that a disordered individual cannot bring order to his environment. By becoming a person of virtue, he can carry that order into every role he occupies—as a parent, teacher, pastor, judge, journalist, leader, neighbor, police officer, or citizen.

I have vowed no let-up in strikes targeting Hamas — which led the 7 October 2023 attack against Israel — and I insist there will be no pullout from Gaza until the group surrenders all of its weapons.

@SEPeaceMissions @jaredkushner I also don't think we need to debate the purpose of the visit of CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow anymore. He carried a message of surrender and probably received a warning. #CiaDirector #MoscowVisit #SurrenderMessage #RU

Who is Witkoff and Kushner's boss as they go to present terms of surrender in Kyiv. A great AI image. Repost as often as possible, it contains its own message.

If Russia is demanding Ukraine’s surrender, forget about calling it “peace negotiations.” This is a demand for capitulation, not peace. #Ukraine #Russia #PeaceNegotiations #RU #UA
