A human drama deliberately turned into a political campaign by activist media. Yesterday I spoke with some Venezuelan journalist colleagues who have faced tough times covering the eviction of Maricarmen in Madrid. It is a human story, hard and easy to solve. But one thing is to tell it and another is to turn it into a deliberate bombardment, into the great political event of the year. Journalism is also criteria, hierarchy, selection, and editing. I randomly opened two openly leftist media outlets and found scroll after scroll dedicated to the case… an exceptional coverage. It is evident that the episode has already been incorporated into a political battle. That is why it particularly catches my attention to read journalists questioning, almost with hope, whether "the case of Maricarmen's eviction could be unleashing a latent social response with unexpected political and electoral consequences." An important boundary blurs there. One thing is to detect and explain a possible social reaction; another, quite different, is to desire it, amplify it, and then present that amplification as proof that the reaction exists. When many politically aligned media outlets simultaneously decide that a story should occupy a disproportionate part of their agenda, they are also intervening in the construction of the event that they later analyze. That does not turn the eviction into a false story nor does it diminish the gravity of the personal drama. The interesting journalistic question is another: why does this eviction, among thousands, become a national symbol precisely now, who decides it should be, and to what extent does the coverage reflect a spontaneous social mobilization or actively contribute to producing it? The public debate itself offers a clue: even a column published today in El País points out that other evictions occur daily that receive incomparably less attention. (translated)
