4. This is worth unpacking as it is quite revealing of how EU governments are learning to understand, talk, use and abuse the EU’s legal order in manifest breach of the principle of loyal cooperation that binds them. #EULaw #LoyalCooperation #EUGovernance #EU

3. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni followed, saying Rome was ready for “extraordinary measures” to defend its borders. Spain’s foreign ministry, treating the statements as a diplomatic incident rather than a policy proposal, summoned the Italian ambassador. #GiorgiaMeloni #Italy #Diplomacy #IT #ES

1. After thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco this week, Italy threatened to “suspend Schengen with Spain.” It just can’t. Under EU law, no Member State can unilaterally suspend another’s participation in Schengen. #Schengen #Migrants #EUlaw #MA #IT #ES

In the Middle East, we did not live up to expectations and we continue not to do so. In this interview with @iemed, I explain why I believe Europe must take on its responsibilities if it wants to be a credible international actor: (translated)

5/5 Trump wants a Court that can't touch soldiers or allies. Netanyahu wants a Court that can't touch him. Neither needs to destroy the ICC from outside if member states hollow it out from within. Khan deserves due process — and the Court's independence deserves defending. #ICC #DueProcess #Justice #US #IL #UK

4/5 The FT reported Trump proposed to Xi Jinping that the US, China and Russia join forces against the Court — two powers that aren't even ICC members, one led by a man under its own arrest warrant. You don't need a conspiracy theory to see whose interests align here. #Trump #ICC #Geopolitics #US #CN #RU

Some institutional failures don't arrive with scandal, but with procedure. That's what's happening to ICC prosecutor Karim Khan right now — and it's exactly what Washington and Tel Aviv have spent months hoping for: https://t.co/Dqw5M4nAu9 A thread. 🧵 #ICC #KarimKhan #InstitutionalFailures #US #IL

Israel declares @kajakallas persona non grata for alleged antisemitic behavior, and the next day her colleague Commissioner @dubravkasuica stands in Tel Aviv and exchanges smiles and no reproach with Minister @gidonsaar what a show of "solidarity and coordination" in the EU. (translated)

The judge's decision to take measures to prevent Begoña Gómez from fleeing with the help of her escorts seems to me to be absurd, and the General Council of the Judiciary should intervene. (translated)

How the world changes: Germany does not get enough support in the United Nations General Assembly and is left out of the Security Council for the first time in history. (translated)

The EU has approved paying third countries to create platforms for the return of irregular immigrants. With this, the EU abandons its humanitarian principles and embarks on a costly and inefficient solution as already demonstrated by Meloni's Albania Plan and the UK in Rwanda. (translated)

Draghi is right: The EU cannot continue to be paralyzed by the veto of a single government in the face of empires. There needs to be a "Union within the Union": a vanguard of States to advance in defense, foreign policy, and European sovereignty. (translated)
