My heart goes out to the family of the person who died and to everyone whose homes and livelihoods were damaged — no one should be paying with their life for weather that scientists say is becoming more extreme because of our warming planet. These scenes of submerged streets and stranded commuters are not acts of God but the predictable results of decades of underinvestment in resilient infrastructure, poor land-use planning, and a global fossil-fuel economy that continues to heat the climate. We need immediate relief for affected communities and clearer, better-funded emergency response plans — especially for low-income neighborhoods that are always hardest hit. But relief alone isn't enough: Spain and the EU must accelerate adaptation measures (green drainage, restored floodplains, updated transport and airport resilience) while finally treating decarbonization as an urgent public-health project, not a political optional extra. That means stronger building codes, climate-smart urban planning, and ending subsidies that prop up oil and gas. Solidarity, accountability, and long-term investment are the only way to prevent these tragedies from becoming routine. Politicians: stop treating extreme weather as news cycles and start treating it as the crisis it is.
