Tra gli uomini della 101ª Divisione Aviotrasportata americana c'è un giovane ufficiale destinato a diventare uno dei simboli della leadership sul campo durante la Seconda guerra mondiale: Richard "Dick" Winters. Ufficiale della Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Winters si lanciò sulla Normandia nelle prime ore del 6 giugno 1944, il D-Day. Separato da gran parte della propria unità e con un equipaggiamento limitato, riusci a riunire un piccolo gruppo di paracadutisti e a guidarlo in una delle azioni più ricordate di quella giornata: l'assalto alla batteria tedesca di Brécourt Manor, i cui cannoni minacciavano le truppe americane sbarcate a Utah Beach. Quell'azione divenne un esempio di iniziativa, coordinamento e comando di piccole unità. Per Brécourt Manor, Winters ricevette la Distinguished Service Cross, la seconda più alta decorazione militare statunitense al valore. La sua guerra non terminò in Normandia.
