Férfiként, ha két férfit látok egymással intim kapcsolatban egy filmben, vagy akár a valóságban, bennem gyakran ellenérzés jelenik meg. Nem feltétlenül harag vagy gyűlölet. Inkább egy ösztönös belső távolságtartás. Valami azt mondja bennem: ezt nem akarom látni. És közben van ennek az érzésnek egy különös párja. Ha két nőt látok egymással, egészen más reakciót vált ki belőlem. Sokszor szépnek találom. Néha kifejezetten izgatónak. És itt kezdődik az igazán érdekes rész. Mert ha azt mondom magamnak, hogy az egyik természetes, a másik pedig visszataszító, akkor rögtön felmerül egy kellemetlen kérdés: Mi alapján döntöm el ezt? Ha két ember szeretete önmagában nem jelent veszélyt rám, akkor miért vált ki belőlem különböző érzéseket pusztán attól függően, hogy férfiakról vagy nőkről van szó? Talán az első válasz egyszerű: férfi vagyok. Egy női test számomra lehet vonzó. Egy női közelséghez, női szépséghez, női intimitáshoz saját vágyak és képzetek kapcsolódnak. Két nő látványa ezért nem feltétlenül úgy jelenik meg bennem, mint két ember kapcsolatának látványa. Hanem a saját vágyam is belép a képbe. Két férfi esetében viszont nincs ilyen kapcsolódási pont.Sőt, talán éppen ellenkezőleg. Egy másik férfi férfiassága valami egészen mást jelent számomra. Versengést, erőt, rivalizálást, azonosulást – és talán olyan ösztönös dolgokat is, amelyeket nem szívesen vallunk be magunknak. Lehet, hogy ezért zavar. Nem azért, mert két férfi szeretete önmagában veszélyt jelentene számomra. Hanem mert nem tudok vele mit kezdeni a saját férfiidentitásomon belül. És van itt még valami. A kultúra, amelyben felnőttünk, évtizedeken, évszázadokon keresztül egészen másképpen ábrázolta a férfi és a női homoszexualitást. A két férfi kapcsolatát gyakran nevetségessé, betegessé vagy férfiatlanná tette. A két nő kapcsolatát viszont sokszor erotizálta. Talán azt gondoljuk, hogy a saját érzéseink teljesen belülről jönnek. Pedig ki tudja, mennyi mindent tanultunk meg úgy, hogy észre sem vettük? Filmekből. Viccekből. Pornográfiából. Beszélgetésekből. A környezetünk reakcióiból. Abból, ahogyan gyerekként azt hallottuk, milyen egy „igazi férfi”. És lehet, hogy mire felnőttünk, már nem is tudjuk pontosan megmondani, melyik érzésünk a sajátunk, és melyiket kaptuk készen. De ettől még az érzés valódi. Nem kell letagadnom, hogy zavar valami ahhoz, hogy megpróbáljam megérteni. És talán éppen ez a lényeg. Mert van különbség aközött, hogy valamit érzek, és aközött, hogy mit kezdek azzal, amit érzek. Lehet, hogy két férfi látványa továbbra sem fog tetszeni. Lehet, hogy két nő látványa továbbra is szépnek és vonzónak fog tűnni számomra. De talán nem ugyanazt kell keresnem a két érzés mögött. Az egyikben ott van a saját szexuális vágyam. A másikban pedig talán valami egészen más: egy régi beidegződés, a férfiasságról alkotott képem, az azonosulás hiánya, vagy egyszerűen az a tény, hogy vannak dolgok, amelyek idegenek számomra. És talán nem is az a cél, hogy minden érzésünket megváltoztassuk. Hanem hogy legyen bátorságunk megkérdezni: Miért érzem ezt? Mert az ember önmagát talán nem akkor ismeri meg igazán, amikor olyan dolgokkal találkozik, amelyeket szeret. Hanem amikor olyasmivel találkozik, amitől ösztönösen elfordulna.
