The Psychology Behind Political Violence Political life carries an appetite for violence beneath the surface. A shooter leaves a manifesto; supporters celebrate; online strangers justify killing over insults, misgendering, and fantasies of execution. We’re told these are separate phenomena—different ideologies, grievances, causes—but they’re deeply connected. The murderer, the celebrant, and the online fantasist share one conviction: blood will build a better world. We often assume ideology comes first, violence second—radicalization infecting an otherwise ordinary person. But corrupted people may seek ideologies that rationalize what they already want to believe. Feeling comes first; philosophy follows. Nietzsche called this *ressentiment*: not ordinary anger, but enduring resentment rooted in surrendered agency and perpetual victimhood. Ressentiment is creative: it turns grievance into virtue and revenge into justice. That’s why movements can sound humanitarian while obsessing over enemies. They promise liberation but focus on who must be eliminated; they call violence self-defense while celebrating destruction. Notice the imbalance: energy goes to identifying who deserves punishment, not to explaining how their better society would work. This is the difference between genuine grievance and pathological ressentiment. Genuine grievance seeks repair; ressentiment seeks subtraction. Its “solutions” are fantasies of punishment—heads cut off, privilege liquidated, wrong pronouns punished. These aren’t coherent doctrines of stability; they’re rationalizations for resentment. Ressentiment also despises self-improvement because it requires admitting agency. Its worldview depends on locating suffering outside oneself. The deepest enemy of these movements, then, is not any specific ideology. It is agency itself.

The article advocates for the necessity of a Right to Know alongside the Right to Repair, as consumers and organizations often lack sufficient knowledge, skills, or resources to maintain and repair the value of their products, leading valuable items to be regarded as waste too quickly instead of being sustainably reused. Aging LA infrastructure, water main breaks. Fine. This can happen. Why it took 4+ hours to shut the water off is wild though. Now watch how long it takes for the city to repair the sinkhole on Sunset, one of the busiest streets in America. Few comps below: https://t.co/JrBZyGtcst #LADrought #Infrastructure #WaterCrisis #US

The right to repair is coming into effect. EU regulations will start to apply on July 31. The EU directive “Right to Repair” aims to strengthen the repair market and limit the replacement of equipment. Manufacturers and services will have to provide spare parts and documentation for repairs. Poland is preparing its own regulations. (translated)

I’d say the tempo of Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries outpaces Russia’s ability to repair them. More hit today in Saratov, Tatarstan and possibly Ufa. https://t.co/nBnFR9pm5t #Ukraine #Russia #Strikes #UA #RU

The EU announced that it will spend €8.3 million to set up “regional hubs” tasked with monitoring and repairing subsea cables, in the latest move since the Commission decided to tackle alleged sabotage from Russian vessels in the Baltic. #EUSecurity #SubseaCables #BalticProtection #EU #RU

With these first regional hubs and dedicated investment in repair capabilities, Europe is moving from concern to action: strengthening our ability to detect threats, respond more rapidly, and act collectively when our critical infrastructure is at risk. #CyberSecurity #Infrastructure #EUAction #EU

We are allocating €5.8M to establish the first two Regional Cable Hubs in Baltic & Mediterranean Seas, while launching a €40M call to strengthen Europe’s capacity to repair submarine communication cables. The EU directive Right to Repair, which Poland must implement by July 31, 2026, will change the electronics and home appliances market. For companies, this means new obligations towards customers and the necessity to restructure business models based on replacement rather than repair. (translated)
