Olivier Babeau denounced what he called a great educational failure. He stated that many young people—without it applying to all, but more than before according to him—despised and ignored cultural heritage. He accused cynical leaders of urging them to trample it, while they did not know it and did not understand it, and attributed this willingness to boredom, bravado, or the need to forge an identity through destruction. To support his argument, he mentioned Hannah Arendt and her reflection on the necessity of protecting the world from destruction by the new generations, in *The Crisis in Education*, p. 239, ed. Folio essais, 1972. #Éducation #Culture #Héritage (translated)

Olivier Babeau believed that an ambitious young professional would benefit from leaving France. He attributed this encouragement to the country's choice to finance redistribution at the cost of collective impoverishment, in his view, and to a low growth rate which he considered linked to a system that hindered activity and competitiveness. He argued that, over several decades, the wealth gap had widened: the median income in the United States was, according to him, 60% higher than that in France, or 30% higher in purchasing power parity. He maintained that a highly redistributive system took more from those who worked to support those who did not work. He also estimated that the strong progressivity of taxes in France absorbed a significant part of the additional income derived from work, which made it rational, in his eyes, for people who worked a lot and for a long time to leave. Finally, Babeau criticized part of the political spectrum for wanting to increase taxes without limit. He claimed that the wealthier were already financing the system, of which 57% of the French were net beneficiaries. While deeming redistribution healthy and solidarity necessary, he believed that the contempt for those who worked and created activity exceeded limits. According to him, the patriotism that led them to accept this disadvantage risked turning into masochism, to the detriment of productive forces. #France #Travail #Redistribution (translated)

Olivier Babeau believed that Tocqueville's paradox was evident in a country where, according to him, redistribution and the equalization of conditions were particularly important, and where culture, education, and higher education were free for all. He wrote that a significant part of the population nevertheless perceived their society as marked by injustices and systemic violence. He added that, according to Tocqueville, the more equality progressed, the more the remaining inequalities became unbearable. Babeau also believed that meritocracy made individuals responsible for their condition, as opposed to the former regime based on birth. #Tocqueville #Inégalités #Méritocratie (translated)

Olivier Babeau believed that a revival was necessary for France to regain a future and escape the pitying contempt that, according to him, the world now showed towards it. He advocated for drawing inspiration from Javier Milei to redefine the role of the state, from Nayib Bukele regarding security—using derogatory terms about unspecified groups—and from Elon Musk for the spirit of conquest. He added that he did not expect these changes to occur. #France #avenir #réforme (translated)

Olivier Babeau estimated that the situation regarding pensions had been clarified too late and that the lack of figures had delayed the collective diagnosis by several years. He wrote that France invests less than other countries in education and that its public services are underfunded due to the burden of pensions. According to him, an earlier clarification might have allowed for a more serious agreement on a significant increase in career length and employment rates, rather than allowing the situation to gradually worsen until he called it dramatic. #Retraites #Éducation #ServicesPublics (translated)

Olivier Babeau wrote that France was collapsing under the weight of a social protection system that it could no longer afford to finance and, to a lesser extent, of a state that was too large and needed to be profoundly modernized. He believed that the denial of this situation structured the public debate and that there was nothing else to understand. #France #Société #Économie (translated)

Unpopular opinion: the solution for our school is to go back to a system before the unified college. It makes no sense to push these young people who have no interest in studying all the way to the baccalaureate. It's a waste of time and resources for everyone. And it creates bitterness once the inevitable failure arrives. We need to stop and professionalize much earlier. But for that, we must accept that not everyone should be thrown into the same pot of mediocrity. However, in France, we love that.
