I say: 'To demonstrate is a right. To lay our cities to waste is not.' I say hooligans have exploited the protests to sow chaos. I say people in Turin were detained while carrying cobblestones and window-breaking hammers. I say: 'Do not be ambiguous about this'; condemnation must be unanimous because any hesitation becomes justification. #ViolentClashes #Protests #GiorgiaMeloni

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 — 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗜, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 A newly exposed US political influence network appears to have been designed around a different target from most election propaganda. Its primary audience was not necessarily the voter reading a website, but the automated systems that search the web on behalf of AI chatbots. Threat-intelligence company VisionHeight initially identified 37 anonymous websites presenting themselves as state or local news organisations, opinion publications and national issue sites. By 15 October, the company's co-founder and chief technology officer, Nitsan Daniel, told CyberScoop that the investigation had expanded the observed footprint to 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟰 𝗨𝗦 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟰𝟲𝟬 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀. The states identified were Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. The infrastructure shows unusually strong signs of coordination. All 37 domains in the original dataset were registered during a single evening; 36 were registered within approximately eight minutes. On 30 September alone, the network published roughly 𝟭𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 using common templates and four recurring layouts. VisionHeight assesses that the scale and production pattern strongly suggest extensive automation, although that does not by itself prove which generative-AI system, if any, produced the text. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹. Candidate profiles can run to about 5,000 words, accompanied by similarly long voter guides containing 50 to 63 questions phrased in the style of queries someone might put to an AI assistant. Across the network, formulations such as a candidate being “the stronger choice” were repeated hundreds of times. One profile contained the phrase 34 times. In several voter guides examined by VisionHeight, the favoured candidate was named more than 110 times while an opponent appeared only six or seven times. The websites were also configured to make themselves unusually accessible to AI. Their crawler instructions explicitly welcomed 17 automated systems associated with companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Perplexity, Meta, Amazon and Apple. Some pages were marked in machine-readable metadata as news articles, while apparently separate publications cited one another. The result is a manufactured ecosystem in which several apparently independent local sources can reinforce the same conclusion. That is the central technique. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. The more immediate objective appears to be manipulation of the retrieval and search layer: place highly optimised material online, make it easy for automated crawlers to index, create the appearance of corroboration, and increase the chance that an AI assistant retrieves those pages when answering a political question. There is evidence that the network crossed that boundary. VisionHeight says it confirmed that 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆 cited Tar Heel State Report as the first source in at least one response. Separately, one of the network's candidate pages reached third place in a Google search six days after publication, above Ballotpedia for the tested query. These findings demonstrate that the material can enter AI-relevant search and retrieval pipelines. They do 𝗻𝗼𝘁 demonstrate that the operation changed anyone's vote, nor establish how frequently major chatbots have used the network. The timing matters because AI has become part of the election-information environment. An AAPC Foundation survey of 1,568 likely US voters found that about one in five planned to use AI to investigate a race on their ballot, while 38 per cent reported having received election information through an AI-generated search summary. A separate NewsGuard audit found that leading chatbots frequently cited partisan websites disguised as local journalism without clearly identifying their political affiliations. The newly identified network appears to take that existing vulnerability one step further by constructing content specifically around the way machines search and summarise information. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁? 𝗔𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿. VisionHeight has not attributed the operation to any individual, campaign, company, political party or foreign government. No confirmed name of an operator has been publicly established. Nitsan Daniel is the researcher who helped expose the network, not a person connected to its operation. Some components have explicitly partisan branding. VisionHeight's indicators include domains such as Affordability Democrats, Democratic Women House, Public Safety Democrats and Republican Incumbent Watch, while the live Affordability Democrats site promotes Democratic candidates across 11 competitive House races. That provides evidence about the political direction of some of the published material, but it does 𝗻𝗼𝘁 establish who commissioned, financed or operated the infrastructure, and it would be unjustified to attribute it to the Democratic Party or any particular campaign. The network also appears broader than congressional politics. The live Tar Heel State Report has carried material on county commission and judicial contests, illustrating why the method may be particularly effective in down-ballot races where established local reporting is thin. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲. Propaganda no longer has to persuade a human being directly. It can instead attempt to shape the information environment from which an apparently neutral machine constructs its answer. 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗦: Active / newly exposed and expanding as of 15–16 October 2026. KENYA — EIGHTH EBOLA INFECTION CONFIRMED Importance: 10/10 — Critical Kenya's Director-General for Health, Patrick Amoth, confirmed the country's eighth Ebola infection. The latest patient is a 49-year-old attendant who cleaned utensils and linen and may have been exposed to the country's first patient, who died in Nairobi on 5 October after travelling from DR Congo. The man developed symptoms while under quarantine and tested positive on Sunday. The linked cases underscore the importance of contact tracing and infection prevention in healthcare settings. Source — Reuters, 18 October 2026 https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/kenya-confirms-eighth-ebola-case-regional-outbreak-spreads-2026-10-18/ 2. DR CONGO — AUTHORITIES CONFIRM EBOLA IN AN EIGHTH PROVINCE Importance: 10/10 — Critical DR Congo's National Institute for Biomedical Research officially confirmed two Ebola cases, including one death, in North Ubangi province on the border with the Central African Republic. North Ubangi is the eighth Congolese province affected. The country's situation report recorded 9,415 confirmed cases and 4,536 deaths since the outbreak began, including 67 new cases and 26 deaths in the 24 hours to 16 October. The geographical spread increases demands on disease surveillance and treatment capacity. NIGERIA — ARMY CHIEF VISITS BORNO TROOPS AFTER DEADLY BASE ASSAULT Importance: 9/10 — Very High Nigeria's army chief visited troops in the northeast after suspected Islamic State West Africa Province fighters overran a base at Mairari, Borno state. Military and local sources told AFP that 15 soldiers and five members of an anti-jihadist militia were killed, and that attackers looted and burned the base. The visit comes amid concern about rising insurgent activity around Lake Chad and the security of communities and transport routes in northeastern Nigeria. SUDAN–EGYPT BORDER — SURVIVORS DESCRIBE DEADLY STRIKE AT GOLD-MINING SITE Importance: 10/10 — Critical Survivors described an airstrike on the Jabal al-Uqaydat mining area near the Sudan–Egypt border that reportedly killed 72 people the previous week. Rights groups blamed Egypt's air force, while Egypt described operations against illegal mining without directly addressing the specific allegation. Sudan's army chief ordered an investigation. The precise responsibility and casualty figures require independent verification. The incident raises humanitarian and diplomatic concerns in a border area where displaced Sudanese rely on informal mining. CAMEROON — OPPOSITION MRC ELECTS FIRST FEMALE PARTY LEADER Cameroon's opposition Cameroon Renaissance Movement elected Tiriane Balbine Noah to replace Maurice Kamto. Noah, previously interim president, was the only remaining candidate and received more than 96% of delegates' votes. She becomes the party's first female president. Party officials say they are preparing for 2027 local elections; the MRC has raised concerns about restrictions on opposition activity. The longer-term political significance will depend on the party's ability to organise and compete. Source — Africanews, 18 October 2026 https://www.africanews.com/2026/10/18/cameroons-opposition-mrc-elects-its-first-female-president-tiriane-noah/ 7. DR CONGO — GOVERNMENT ALLEGES KABILA IS PREPARING BROADER ARMED CAMPAIGN Congolese government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya accused former president Joseph Kabila of preparing a wider attack on the state after Kabila aligned himself with M23-linked forces through the newly announced Front for the Refoundation of the Nation. Kabila has denied earlier government allegations against him and criticised the administration. Fighting continues in eastern Congo despite mediation efforts. The government's claims are allegations, not independently established findings. EQUATORIAL GUINEA — MALARIA ELIMINATION PROGRAMME EXPANDS BEYOND BIOKO Importance: 9/10 — Very High Equatorial Guinea plans to expand a long-running malaria-control programme from Bioko Island to the mainland and Annobon. Bioko reduced malaria prevalence to approximately 7% through spraying, mosquito nets, monitoring and community outreach. A newly announced $116 million investment will support expansion. Authorities are considering R21 vaccination for children and new surveillance tools. Experts warn that larger territory, poverty and cross-border transmission make elimination much harder on the mainland. EGYPT — BLUE-CHIP SHARES DROP AMID REGIONAL TENSIONS Importance: 8/10 — High Egypt's EGX30 stock index fell 2.6% on Sunday, its steepest intraday decline since February, as Middle East tensions unsettled regional markets. The Egyptian presidency said Cairo was ready to support Saudi Arabia's security as attacks by Yemen's Houthis intensified. Elevated oil prices and regional instability may affect Egyptian financing conditions, transport costs and investor confidence. The market move alone does not establish a longer-term trend. Source — Reuters, 18 October 2026 https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/oil-lifts-saudi-bourse-egypt-tumbles-regional-tensions-2026-10-18/ 10. DR CONGO — EBOLA OUTBREAK COMPOUNDS MENTAL-HEALTH EMERGENCY Importance: 9/10 — Very High Health workers in eastern DR Congo warned that Ebola-related bereavement, stigma and isolation are deepening psychological distress among patients, survivors and medical personnel. A report from Bunia described families affected by multiple deaths and reluctance among neighbours to interact with survivors. Ongoing conflict and displacement compound these pressures. Aid organisations say psychosocial care needs to be integrated with infection control and clinical treatment. RADIO ARC 101:“NEWSSTANDS, ‘ENDANGERED SPECIES’ LIKE CAFÉS: MONEY LOST AND HOPES FROM STANFORD” by NANDO SILVESTRI SOURCE: https://radioarc.it/edicole-razze-in-estinzione-come-i-bar-soldi-persi-e-speranze-da-stanford/ Newsstands are another repository of humanity and knowledge, in many respects similar to cafés, at least as far as the unfortunate fate that has befallen many of them is concerned. The smell of printed paper, coloured card, variegated covers, surprise packets and cellophane was an olfactory molasses that once intoxicated young and old alike and represented, at the same time, a sought-after destination for daily walks and pauses. Stopping by the newsstand meant drawing upon knowledge, entertainment, culture, imagination and creativity. All prerogatives lost on account of the shapeless and amorphous surrogates disseminated by the web. This is the principal reason for the cumulative and recurring closure of a great many Italian newsstands: in economics, one speaks of a sector in demand collapse. But it is not merely a newsstand that closes; a piece of the local and national economy closes with it. From 35,000 newsstands in 2005 to about 20,000 in 2024: -43%. With them goes direct turnover of over €400 million per year, but the real hole is the indirect economy that is never calculated. Each average newsstand in a small town generated distribution worth €15,000 per year in margins for local distributors, couriers, and printers. Moreover, the customer who bought the newspaper would have a coffee, buy a bus ticket, place a bet. Download the Medium App One must consider that without a newsstand, the village cinema loses its only physical promotional outlet, not to mention the losses in terms of advertising. When it closes, it is not only the newsagent who loses. The café loses, the driver loses, the printer loses. In Irpinia, over the last five years, Avellino has lost six newsstands, Ariano Irpino three, Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi two. The total loss in Irpinia amounts to about 22% of outlets. All this means that many of the closures mentioned above have deprived Irpinian cafés of several dozen customers, harming workers, distributors and suppliers. These are jobs that do not make the news, but they exist. Another hard blow inflicted upon the local and national economy in the name of a false progress that almost always favours the business of fixers and the usual suspects. However, what is happening in Puglia, a few kilometres from Irpinia, opens up scenarios of renewal based precisely upon the reconversion of disused newsstands. These are prospects so unique and innovative as to have aroused interest worldwide, especially at Stanford University. This is news of enormous significance that few news programmes have disseminated, in the name of a perennial pre-emption by technologies contemptuous of common sense, tradition and art. In San Severo, 40 km from Upper Irpinia, a newsstand abandoned for six years in Via Matteo Tondi became, on 27 March 2026, the Teatro-Edicola Foyer’97: six chairs, four square metres, an idea by Francesco Gavino. The well-received 10- to 15-minute shows have piqued the curiosity of Stanford University. Its academic journal, the Stanford Social Innovation Review [SSIR], has chosen the Teatro Edicola in San Severo as an international case study with the reportage “The Six-Seat Revolution”. Why is Stanford watching us? Because it has realised that those four square metres can once again generate indirect economic activity. Indeed, 60 spectators in an afternoon can become 60 coffees at the neighbouring café. With a symbolic ticket price of €5, we are talking about a cultural micro-economy. Not to mention the indirect income from tourists and journalists who arrive and frequent B&Bs and restaurants. It is the model Irpinia needs: not to leave the void, but to reconvert it virtuously. Every closed newsstand can become an information point, a micro-cinema, a service hub. Otherwise we shall continue to count only the lowered shutters, without counting the money that no longer circulates.
