The article points out that the disaster in Nepal, caused by the collapse of a glacier and subsequent floods, was triggered by record heat in the Himalayas, which is a consequence of climate change, and emphasizes the irreversible changes across the region that bring an increased risk of similar events in the future. When a picture says more than 100 words Here you can see the height of the pole showing how many vertical meters the alpine glacier has lost during this summer Melting glaciers does not only mean the retreat of the area where they are located, but also thinning It won't be long before alpine glaciers cease to exist. Čtyři čeští středoškoláci přivezli z Itálie jedenáct medailí. Mimo geologickou komunitu o tom skoro nikdo neví. Koncem srpna skončila v Turíně 19. mezinárodní olympiáda věd o Zemi (IESO). Do laboratoří Turínské univerzity a do piemontských geoparků přijelo 166 studentů ze 42 zemí. Česká čtveřice v silné konkurenci posbírala dvě zlata, sedm stříbrných medailí a dva bronzy. Přírodovědecká fakulta Masarykovy univerzity (@muni_cz) to oznámila na sociálních sítích. Jména studentů zatím nezveřejnila a hlavní sdělovací prostředky mlčely. Každý stát smí vyslat pouze čtyři středoškoláky a dva mentory. Českou účast dlouhodobě zaštiťuje Ústav geologických věd v Brně a výběr reprezentantů probíhá prostřednictvím národní Geologické olympiády. Osm dní soutěže mělo přesný rytmus. Po slavnostním zahájení zamířili studenti do terénu a následně lanovkou Skyway Monte Bianco k ledovcům pod Mont Blancem. V neděli absolvovali až šestihodinový písemný test z geologie, geofyziky, meteorologie, oceánografie, astronomie a životního prostředí. Dne 4. září studenty osobně přijal ministr pro vědy o Zemi a o jejich úspěchu informovaly deníky The Times of India i The Indian Express. Indonésie zveřejnila jména, školy i podrobnosti o tom, kdo získal zlato v terénním výzkumu. Ani Ministerstvo školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy (@msmtcr) výsledek nepředalo médiím. Pomozte dostat do médií celý příběh. #ČeskáVěda #Geologie #IESO

A new study shows that the melting of the glacier on Mount Everest is accelerated not only by climate change but also by the enormous number of people who bring warmth to the base camp by producing up to 6000 liters of urine daily, which contributes to the melting of nearly 2500 tons of snow and ice each year. The Austrian glacier Pasterze, still the largest in the country, is rapidly shrinking and is at risk of soon losing its top position due to significant retreat of the ice and reduction of the Hufeisenbruch glacier, which would lead to its division and make it a less significant glacier compared to Gepatschferner in Tyrol.
