Cette foule jeune et métissée rassemblée à Saint Denis, où le temps d’une improbable soirée on trouvait à la fois Bally Bagayoko et l’abbé Raffray, les scouts de France et les scouts d’Europe, Glorious et la Sainte Tunique… Comme si l’on avait vu ce soir une nouvelle génération de catholiques, non pas naître vraiment sous nos yeux - elle était née déjà dans l’émotion de Notre-Dame en flammes, dans le renouveau du catéchuménat ou le succès du pélé de Chartres - mais se forger enfin une identité, se trouver un dénominateur commun. Ou tout simplement un nom. Génération Léon ! Jeunesse catholique consciente de ses différences mais qui n’a plus envie d’en faire des fractures. Génération réconciliée avec elle-même, qui se sait trop minoritaire pour pouvoir s’offrir encore le luxe d’être divisée. Les aînés s’étaient tour à tour agacé ou réjoui, selon leurs sensibilités respectives, face à Benoît XVI et François : un pape de droite, un pape de gauche… Léon ne renie ni l’exigence doctrinale du premier ni l’inépuisable appel à la charité du second mais invite par sa bonhomie paisible et sa joie discrète à supplanter les clivages, pour s’atteler à la seule chose qui compte vraiment : faire feu de tout bois pour annoncer l’évangile… pour que le monde ait la vie !
