Beste Maarten, Deze tweet is onwaardig voor een wetenschapsjournalist van een dagblad zoals @trouw Ik heb tijdens mijn verhoor zorgvuldig mijn woorden gekozen en van een brede context en inhoudelijke onderbouwing voorzien met verbazing over maar ook begrip voor hoe het in het begin van de crisis misliep door de verkeerde casusdefinitie (grote druppelinfectie) gebaseerd op de verkeerde informatie van de WHO op de situatie in Wuhan en zoals ruiterlijk erkend door Jaap van Dissel tijdens zijn eerste verhoor (zie p. 38 en 50 van het stenogram van zijn verhoor voor context). Ik zei ook “beter werd” en zie het openzetten van een raampje niet als panacée. Het beperken van de groepsgrootte was nog veel relevanter en zat wel in het maatregelenpakket. Het zou fijn zijn als je eerst het hele verhoor leest of terugkijkt alvorens je zo’n een reactie tweet. Wat bovendien zeer van belang is, is dat de PEC de uitersten in de coronacrisis voor zoveel als mogelijk weer met elkaar weet te verbinden. Ik denk dat dat kan en het wordt tijd de wonden die geheeld kunnen worden te helen. Dat je doorgaat met polariseren helpt daar niet bij. Tenho visto até gente que apoia Renan Santos dizendo que ele foi “agressivo demais” no debate. Eu penso exatamente o contrário: diante da situação do Brasil, Renan ainda foi pouco. Estamos falando de um país em que milhões de brasileiros saem de casa para trabalhar sem a tranquilidade de saber se voltarão em segurança. Um país sufocado pelo crime organizado, pela corrupção, pelo populismo e por uma polarização que há anos tenta convencer a população de que só existem dois caminhos. E justamente os dois candidatos que lideram essa polarização resolveram não aparecer. Lula não foi. Flávio Bolsonaro não foi, e ainda teve a arrogância de dizer que os candidatos que estavam no palco “não são meus adversários”, deixando claro que seu interesse é debater apenas com Lula. Isso diz muito sobre o problema que enfrentamos. Presidência da República não é uma luta particular entre duas famílias, dois partidos ou dois projetos de poder. O Brasil não pertence a Lula. O Brasil não pertence aos Bolsonaro. Pertence a mais de 200 milhões de brasileiros. Quem pretende governar essas pessoas tem obrigação de subir naquele palco, olhar os adversários nos olhos, apresentar propostas e responder às perguntas difíceis. Querem nosso voto, mas querem escolher quem pode questioná-los. Falam em democracia, mas fogem do contraditório. Pedem confiança para comandar um país inteiro, mas evitam um debate de uma hora e meia. E ainda querem que os demais candidatos se comportem educadamente diante disso? Não. Há momentos em que indignação não é falta de educação. É a reação natural de quem olha para o estado do país e se recusa a tratar tudo isso como normal. Renan foi duro? Foi. Exagerou em alguns termos? Cada um pode fazer essa avaliação. Mas prefiro mil vezes um candidato que entra naquele palco com sangue nos olhos para discutir o futuro do país a políticos que calculam pesquisas, escolhem adversários convenientes e deixam um púlpito vazio quando chega a hora de prestar contas ao eleitor. A polarização sequestrou uma parcela enorme do Brasil e tenta nos fazer acreditar que somos obrigados a escolher eternamente entre os mesmos dois lados. Não somos. Essa gente precisa acordar. O Brasil é muito maior do que Lula versus Bolsonaro. E talvez seja justamente por isso que a presença de alguém disposto a entrar naquele palco e chacoalhar essa eleição incomode tanto. #Democracia #Política #DebateEleitoral

Bedenking over de koers van rector De Sutter aan mijn alma mater UGent en waarom het brokkenparcours voorspelbaar was.👇🏻 De politieke partij Groen staat vandaag aan het uiterst-linkse spectrum van het Vlaamse politieke landschap, samen met de PVDA. Ze vertegenwoordigt maar zo'n 6% van de kiezers. Daar is een goede reden voor: cultureel en sociaal-economisch radicalisme, gekoppeld aan een gebrek aan compromisbereidheid. Groen is een partij die vindt dat alles moet wijken voor de 'goede' zaak. Als je dan een vicepremier van die partij tot rector van de UGent kiest, weet je wat er zal gebeuren: het rectoraat zal geprononceerde links-progressieve ideologische keuzes maken. Dat zal op zijn beurt leiden tot sterke politieke polarisatie op en rond de universiteit. Radicaal-progressieve Gentse academici die voor De Sutter kozen, die er een betekenisvolle minderheid uitmaken, hebben daarmee gekregen wat ze wilden. Velen onder hen vonden al langer dat de universiteit 'van hen' was. En hoe radicaler de progressief, hoe intoleranter. Dat vloeit voort uit de gedachte dat progressieven de 'moral high ground' bezitten. Daardoor zijn andersluidende opinies voor hen al snel minderwaardig en dus fout. Het is deze groep die Cofnas wil zien hangen om ideologische redenen en die nu een stok zoekt om hem buiten te slaan. Dat geldt evenwel niet voor elke academicus die voor deze rector koos. Velen stemden voor De Sutter om andere redenen dan progressieve zelos, bijvoorbeeld omwille van klimaatbezorgdheid. Zij schrikken nu van de ideologische profileringsdrang van de nieuwe rector. De lijst aan polemische beslissingen die De Sutter erdoor drukte is nu al lang, van het gecontesteerde eredoctoraat voor Albanese (waarover de Raad van Bestuur fel verdeeld was!), tot de schorsing van klokkenluider Cofnas vandaag. Ik ben geen UGent-academicus maar slechts een trotse en bezorgde alumnus die er twee masters behaalde. Maar mocht ik dat wel zijn zou ik bij mezelf denken: zou mijn universiteit niet beter gebaat zijn met een strikt a-politieke rector? Met een wetenschapper die louter gerespecteerd wordt omwille van zijn of haar publicaties? Met iemand die opnieuw rust brengt in de tent en de universiteit terugvoert naar zijn essentie: kennis vergaren en overdragen? Dat laatste kan maar op één manier: door een politieke en ideologische neutraliteit te hanteren, als expliciete koers. Want enkel zo kan academische vrijheid werkelijk gedijen. #UGent #academischevrijheid #politiek
