"VILLA DI FARAGOLA": FROM ASCOLI SATRIANO TO THE UNITED STATES — PUBLISHED IN THE PRESTIGIOUS "POPULAR ARCHAEOLOGY USA" SOURCE: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/villa-di-faragola-from-ascoli-satriano-united-states-sardella-ph-d--pgd6f/ in the heart of apulia, buried for fifteen centuries beneath the wheat fields of the carapelle valley, lay one of the most opulent aristocratic residences of ancient italy: the villa of faragola, near ascoli satriano (fg). discovered in 2003 by the university of foggia and excavated under the direction of giuliano volpe and maria turchiano, this extraordinary late antique residence – almost certainly belonging to the cornelii scipiones orfiti, one of the most powerful senatorial families of the fourth century – has yielded wonders unique in their kind to scholars around the world. the best-preserved stibadium in italy: a sigma‑shaped masonry dining couch, decorated with gilded marble reliefs of dionysian theme, at the centre of a summer banqueting hall of incomparable luxury. a private bath complex of more than a thousand square metres – among the largest ever documented on the italian peninsula – with glass‑paste mosaics, opus sectile floors, and walls clad in polychrome marbles imported from tunisia, greece and the peloponnese. a cenatio aestiva where roman senators reclined along the curve of the dining couch while a fountain played among the marbles and the scent of the apulian countryside drifted in through the open colonnade. then, on the night between 6 and 7 september 2017, an arson attack – almost certainly criminal in origin – destroyed within hours the protective covering of the site, scorching the marble floors, warping the mosaics, and sweeping away decades of work. professor volpe, who was in kuala lumpur at the time, learned of the news via whatsapp early that morning. No one has ever been brought to trial but faragola did not surrender. thanks to funding of around three million euros, restoration work was completed in november 2024. the villa still bears the marks of the fire – and archaeologists have deliberately chosen not to erase them: that scar is now history, just as much as the senators’ banquets. the faragola archaeological park is now preparing for its second opening to the public. a magnificent article in the american magazine popular archaeology recounts the entire story – from the daunian roots of the site to its present‑day rebirth. it is truly worth reading.

Scoperta nel 2003 dall'Università di Foggia e scavata sotto la direzione di Giuliano Volpe e Maria Turchiano, questa straordinaria residenza tardoantica – appartenuta con ogni probabilità ai Cornelii Scipiones Orfiti, una delle più potenti famiglie senatorie del IV secolo – ha restituito agli studiosi di tutto il mondo meraviglie uniche nel loro genere. Lo stibadium meglio conservato d'Italia: un triclinio in muratura a forma di sigma, decorato con rilievi marmorei dorati di tema dionisiaco, al centro di una sala da banchetto estiva di lusso incomparabile. Un complesso termale privato di oltre mille metri quadri – tra i più grandi mai documentati su tutto il suolo peninsulare – con mosaici in pasta vitrea, pavimenti in opus sectile e pareti rivestite di marmi policromi provenienti da Tunisia, Grecia e Peloponneso. Una cenatio aestiva dove i senatori romani si recavano a banchettare sdraiati sulla curva del triclinio, mentre una fontana zampillava tra i marmi e il profumo della campagna pugliese entrava dalle colonne aperte. Poi, nella notte tra il 6 e il 7 settembre 2017, un incendio doloso – quasi certamente di matrice criminale – ha distrutto in poche ore la copertura protettiva del sito, calcinando i pavimenti marmorei, deformando i mosaici, spazzando via decenni di lavoro. Il prof. Volpe, che si trovava a Kuala Lumpur, apprende la notizia via WhatsApp di prima mattina. Nessun responsabile è stato mai processato. Ma Faragola non si è arresa. Grazie a un finanziamento di circa tre milioni di euro, i restauri si sono conclusi nel novembre 2024. La villa porta ancora i segni del fuoco – e gli archeologi hanno scelto deliberatamente di non cancellarli: quella cicatrice è ormai storia, tanto quanto il banchetto dei senatori romani. Komisch, dass man immer erst ein "Ex" sein muss, um so etwas aussprechen zu dürfen. Sigmar Gabriel, also der Ex-Chef der SPD, räumt ein, dass sich seine Partei immer weiter von ihrer früheren Wählerbasis entfernt hat. Er sagt klipp und klar: Der Sozialstaat war eine der größten Errungenschaften überhaupt. Doch aus einem Sozialstaat sei ein allumfassender #Sozialhilfestaat geworden! Besonders beim Bürgergeld habe die SPD einen fatalen Fehler gemacht. Wer jahrzehntelang gearbeitet hat, fühlt sich plötzlich nicht mehr ausreichend wertgeschätzt. Für viele entsteht der Eindruck, oh Wunder, dass sich Arbeit immer weniger lohnt. Gabriels Urteil dazu ist deutlich: „Die SPD hat den Arbeitnehmern den Stuhl vor die Tür gestellt.“ Auch bei der Rentenpolitik spart Gabriel nicht mit Kritik. Menschen nach 45 Arbeitsjahren noch länger arbeiten zu lassen oder Rentenkürzungen in Kauf zu nehmen, hält er für den falschen Weg. Gerade Beschäftigte in körperlich anstrengenden Berufen fühlten sich von der Politik längst nicht mehr verstanden. Und selbst bei der AfD räumt Gabriel ein, dass die #Brandmauer allein keine Strategie ist. Wer die AfD schwächen wolle, müsse sie inhaltlich stellen, statt sie hinter der Brandmauer groß werden zu lassen.
