De framing over Jason Arday is al volop bezig. Hij werd opgejaagd door - uiteraard rechtse - 'bloedhonden' omdat hij zwart was. Onzin. Het bracht me een lang vervlogen moment in herinnering: begin mei 1991, de Unesco Conferentie van Windhoek over persvrijheid in Afrika. De Verklaring van Windhoek van 3 mei maakte van die dag de World Press Freedom Day van de Verenigde Naties. Ik was in Windhoek als voorzitster van de Internationale Federatie van Journalisten (IFJ), de wereldwijde federatie van vakbonden van journalisten. Tijdens de conferentie komt de voorzitter van een kleine, radicale Zuid-Afrikaanse bond, Thami Maswai, me zeggen dat ik goede dingen zeg als IFJ-voorzitter. 'Maar in mijn land zou ik nooit een vrouw als voorzitter verkiezen want dat is strijdig met mijn cultuur'. Ik antwoord droogjes: 'Thank you Thami, but in the meantime, I hope you change your culture.' Een ultra-linkse Duitse journalist die dat hoort wijst me streng terecht. Hoe durf ik de 'cultuur' van die man bekritiseren. Maar een Zuid-Afrikaanse collega van Indiase afkomst komt me feliciteren. 'Ik heb gehoord wat je aan Thami zei, en ik ben zo blij. Ik ben het zo moe dat iedereen al begint instemmend te knikken zodra een Zuid-Afrikaan van kleur de mond opent. I want to be argued with, not condescended to.' Ik ben nooit vergeten hoezeer die man, die geleden had onder, en gevochten had tegen de apartheid, zich vernederd voelde door een nieuw soort apartheid, namelijk de dubbele maatstaf van wat toen nog niet woke heette. Die mondde uit in het omgekeerde racisme van de lage verwachtingen dat de lat, ook in de academische wereld, lager legde naargelang huidskleur en afkomst. Dàt is waarvan Jason Arday het slachtoffer is geworden. Iedereen met kritisch gezond verstand kon doorheen de indianenverhalen kijken die hij over zichzelf vertelde, en die de uitgever de afgelopen weken inderhaast heeft verwijderd uit diens boek dat deze maand uitkomt. Het Jezus College van Cambridge plaatste Arday in de schijnwerpers door hem op een ongebruikelijk jonge leeftijd op een prestigieus professoraat te benoemen. Natuurlijk leidde dat tot een kritische doorlichting van niet alleen zijn sterke verhalen maar ook zijn academische publicaties. En dus ook tot de vaststelling van plagiaat, dè academische doodzonde, in zijn doctoraat. Gezien de welwillende omerta van woke links jegens niet-blanken kwamen die onthullingen aanvankelijk uit de rechterzijde. Dat maakt er geen heksenjacht van. De verantwoordelijkheid voor het drama ligt bij de academische autoriteiten die een slimme en vindingrijke fantast niet grondig doorlichtten: he was not argued with, he was condescended to. En hij verdroeg het blijkbaar niet toen hij van het voetstuk tuimelde waarop Jezus College hem zo lichtvaardig had geplaatst. Nog een woordje over de 'heksenjacht'. De woke linkerzijde is wel de laatste die dat woord moet in de mond nemen, gezien haar ongenadige vervolging van professoren, schrijvers en zovele anderen die het DEI-dogma niet aanhangen. Ik denk hierbij aan één geval onder de vele, namelijk professor Carole K. Hooven. Ze werd weggepest uit de medische faculteit van Harvard omdat ze in juli 2021 over 'zwangere vrouwen' had gesproken. Stel u voor, ze vond dat ze aan toekomstige dokters moest doceren in termen van wetenschap en biologie. Maar voor de gender warriors is dat transfoob, want als een vrouw die zich identificeert als man toch nog een kind baart, wie of wat is de wetenschap om te zeggen dat er biologisch slechts twee geslachten bestaan, en dat mannen niet zwanger kunnen zijn? Dat ik dit durf schrijven maakt van mij een Terf. Alleen wie niet vertrouwd is met de alternatieve wereld van DEI zal niet weten wat dit letterwoord betekent: Trans exclusionary radical feminist. Radicaal ben ik gebleven, als feminist en ook inzake de les die ik in Windhoek kreeg. Respect voor al wie ik ontmoet kan ik alleen tonen door met iedereen op dezelfde manier te argumenteren en te debatteren. En dus ook door in debat te gaan met iedereen, ook Afrikanen, die de gruwelijke genitale verminking van kleine meisjes in Afrika een cultural practice noemen. Kortom, ik blijf erbij dat iedereen die ik ontmoet verdient, to be argued with, not to be condescended to. #Journalism #AcademicFreedom #WokeCulture
