Kids, nu blir det söndagsskola med farbror Sfeir. I dag ska vi reda ut varför söndag heter söndag. Den korta förklaringen är: därför att det är solens dag. Den lite längre förklaringen börjar hos, trumvirvel 🥁…romarna! De kallade dagen dies Solis, alltså solens 🌞 dag. När de primitiva germanska folken tog över den romerska sjudagarsveckan översatte de helt enkelt namnet. På fornnordiska blev det sunnudagr och på fornsvenska sunnodagher, därav kommer vår söndag. ”Sön” har alltså ingenting med sömn att göra, även om många tonåringar gör sitt bästa för att bevisa motsatsen. Det är en gammal släkting till ordet sol som har blivit kvar inne i veckodagens namn. Samma sol syns fortfarande tydligt i engelskans Sunday och tyskans Sonntag. Sen kom kristendomen ✝️ som gav dagen en helt ny innebörd. Jesus uppstod enligt evangelierna på veckans första dag, dagen efter den judiska sabbaten. Söndagen blev de kristnas gudstjänstdag och kallades också Herrens dag. I de romanska språken tog det kristna namnet över: italienskans domenica, franskans dimanche och spanskans domingo kommer alla från latinets dies Dominica, Herrens dag. Här uppe i Norden behöll vi det gamla namnet. Kristendomen tog över dagen, men solen fick behålla skylten.
