🇮🇸 PUTIN WINS IN ICELAND? That is how I described the result of Iceland’s EU referendum — and Russian state television immediately picked it up. A close vote and a clear democratic verdict, and it has our full respect. Like NATO, the EU is built by and for democracies. Through the EEA, Iceland stays inside our single market and close to Brussels. That partnership isn't going anywhere. #Democracy #EU #Iceland #IS #EU #NATO

Iceland voted this weekend against reopening EU membership talks. That is their decision and their full right, and I respect it without reservation. A nation weighed what membership would add to what it already has, and answered: not enough. This is a sobering moment, #Iceland #EUMembership #Sovereignty #IS

Sad news from Reykjavik: Icelanders vote no on opening EU accession talks. Given the state the EU is in, I understand the disappointment. Still, a real pity. 🇮🇸 joining would’ve been a win for both sides: less copying our rules, more writing them together. https://t.co/QPCdqVStz3 #Iceland #EUAccession #EUReform #IS #EU

Icelanders have said no to Brussels. 53% of voters rejected reopening EU accession negotiations. Iceland belongs to the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area. Nearly half of Iceland's population supports European integration, and Reykjavik is eager to cooperate with the EU through the EEA Agreement.
