Paul Kroll war aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg als Invalide heimgekehrt: Ihm fehlte ein Bein, weitere Verletzungen an Arm, Schulter und Kopf behinderten ihn bis ans Lebensende. Nachdem er in einem Pflegeheim in Göttingen Karikaturen herumgezeigt hatte, in denen Hitler verspottet wurde, wurde er denunziert, angeklagt und wegen „Wehrkraftzersetzung” und „Verrat“ zum Tode verurteilt. Sein Richter Werner Massengeil (NSDAP-Mitglied schon seit 1924), der für Dutzende ähnlicher Urteile verantwortlich war, wurde 1947 wieder Richter und war von 1951 bis 1961 Direktor des Amtsgerichts in Marburg. Kroll hinterließ eine Frau und fünf Kinder; der älteste Sohn war schon 1943 gefallen. Am 29. August 1944 wurde Kroll in Frankfurt-Preungesheim hingerichtet. Er war 60 Jahre alt.
